Hum Chaar Movie Review: A Fresh Take on Friendship or Just Another Melodrama?
When we think of Rajshri Productions, we usually imagine large families, grand weddings, and traditional values. However, with the movie Hum Chaar (2019), the production house tried to shift its focus from “Family is Family” to “Friends are Family.” Featuring a fresh cast including Prit Kamani, Simran Sharma, Anshuman Malhotra, and Tushar Pandey, the film attempts to capture the essence of modern-day bonding.
In this review, we will look at whether this movie lives up to the Rajshri legacy and if the 4K version is worth your time.
The Plot: A Journey from College to Reality
The story revolves around four friends—Namit, Manjari, Abeer, and Surjo—who are inseparable during their time in medical college. Like most college stories, a misunderstanding occurs, leading to a massive fallout. The characters go their separate ways, only to be brought back together by destiny years later.
While the plot is quite predictable, the emotional beats are relatable. The first half is breezy and filled with nostalgia, while the second half takes a more serious, emotional turn.
Performance and Character Chemistry
The strength of Hum Chaar lies in its casting. Prit Kamani delivers a confident performance and has a great screen presence. Simran Sharma plays her part with a mix of vulnerability and strength. Tushar Pandey, whom we loved in Chhichhore, brings a lot of heart to the group, and Anshuman Malhotra fits perfectly into the ensemble.
Their chemistry feels organic. You actually believe that these four people could be best friends in real life. However, the script sometimes feels a bit dated, making some emotional scenes feel slightly forced.
Critiquing the Hindi Dubbing and Audio Quality
Interestingly, many viewers have pointed out the audio experience of the film on digital platforms. Since this is an original Hindi movie, “dubbing” technically refers to the ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) done in the studio.
Specifically, the Hindi dubbing quality feels inconsistent in several scenes. In some of the high-drama sequences, the lip-sync appears slightly off, which can be distracting if you are watching in 4K. Furthermore, the background score sometimes overpowers the dialogues. While the voices of the main actors are clear, the secondary characters sound like they were voiced by amateur dubbing artists, taking away from the realism of the film.
Director’s Vision: Abhishek Dixit vs. The Rajshri Style
This film marks the directorial debut of Abhishek Dixit. If we compare his work to legendary Rajshri directors like Sooraj Barjatya (Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Vivaah), there is a noticeable difference.
Abhishek tries to move away from the “sanskari” tropes. He introduces more contemporary problems like career pressure and ego clashes. However, he doesn’t completely let go of the Rajshri DNA. The movie still feels “too clean” and at times lacks the grit of modern friendship films like Dil Chahta Hai or Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Compared to other films under this banner, Hum Chaar feels like a brave but safe middle ground.
Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?
Now, the big question: Should you watch Hum Chaar in 4K or is it just a one-time watch on a standard screen?
Why you might skip the 4K:
The cinematography by Himanshu Dubey is decent but not breathtaking. There are no massive landscapes or high-budget visual effects that demand a 4K resolution. Moreover, the minor dubbing issues and lip-sync errors become even more visible in high definition.
Why you might watch it:
If you are a fan of clean, emotional dramas that you can watch with your entire family without skipping any scenes, this is a good pick. The colors are vibrant, and the youthful energy of the cast looks great in 4K.
Final Verdict: Hum Chaar is a one-time watch. It is a sweet, light-hearted movie that reminds you of your college days. While it isn’t a masterpiece, it provides a decent dose of entertainment. If you have a high-speed internet connection and a large TV, go for the 4K experience for the colors, but don’t expect a cinematic marvel.
Rating: 2.5/5 Stars
Watch it for: The chemistry between the four leads and a clean family-friendly storyline.
Skip it if: You prefer realistic, gritty cinema or high-octane friendship thrillers.
