I finally watched the much-awaited movie Kanguva this weekend. I had high expectations because of the massive hype. Suriya is an actor I truly admire for his hard work. This movie tries to tell a big story across two different timelines. One part is set in the ancient past, and the other is in the modern day. How It Compares to Director Siva’s Previous Films

I have seen many films by Director Siva before this one. Usually, he makes family-oriented action movies like Viswasam and Vedalam. Those movies were simple and emotional. However, with Kanguva, I feel he tried something way bigger. He moved away from his usual “Masala” style to create an epic world.

In his older films, the focus was on sister or father sentiments. Here, the focus is on world-building and raw power. While I liked his ambition, I think the emotional touch of his previous films was missing. It felt more like he wanted to show off the scale rather than the heart. Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched this movie in a high-quality format. The 4K resolution is honestly the best part of the experience. I loved the color grading in the forest scenes. They used a lot of brown and grey tones to make it look old. The details on the costumes and the skin textures looked very sharp on my screen. It did not look cheap at all. The CGI in the past timeline was mostly good, though some parts felt a bit messy.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing. I have a mixed opinion here. The voice chosen for Suriya is strong and fits his warrior look. However, the lip-sync was off in several places. During the loud action scenes, the Hindi dialogues felt a bit rushed. Some of the translated words felt too formal for a tribal setting. I think the dubbing team could have done a better job with the flow of the sentences. It didn’t feel as natural as the Hindi dub of Pushpa or KGF.

The Acting and Music

Suriya carried the whole movie on his shoulders. I could see the effort he put into his physical look. He looks like a real king from the past. Bobby Deol plays the villain, but I felt his role was too short. I wanted to see more of him on screen. The music by Devi Sri Prasad is very loud. At times, the background score was so loud that I could not hear the dialogues clearly. I wish the sound mixing was a bit more balanced.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is this movie worth your time? I would say it is a visual treat. If you have a good 4K TV and a sound system, you should definitely watch it in 4K. The visuals are the main reason to watch this film. However, the story is a bit weak in the second half.

I do not think this is a movie you will watch many times. For me, it is a one-time watch because of the thin plot. But for the technical work and Suriya’s performance, it deserves a look. If you are a fan of grand visuals, go for it. If you want a deep and logical story, you might be a bit disappointed.

Conclusion

Kanguva is a brave attempt by Director Siva. It shows that Indian cinema is getting better at visuals. I liked the past sequences but found the modern ones a bit boring. The Hindi dubbing is okay but not great. I suggest you watch it once for the scale and Suriya’s acting.
