Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: A Massive Sci-Fi Journey

I finally sat down to watch Kalki 2898 AD on my 4K screen last night. I have been waiting for this movie for a long time. Ever since the first trailer dropped, I wanted to see how Indian cinema handles a big sci-fi story. After watching it, I can say I have a lot of mixed feelings. Some parts blew my mind, while others felt a bit slow.

The Story and Characters

The movie blends the future with our ancient history. I really liked how Nag Ashwin connected the Mahabharata to a dystopian world. Amitabh Bachchan as Ashwatthama is the best part of the film. Every time he came on screen, I felt a different kind of energy. His height and his voice make him look like a real legend.

Prabhas plays Bhairava, and I feel his character starts a bit too light-hearted. I wanted to see him in a serious role from the start. However, towards the climax, he truly shines. How it Compares to Nag Ashwin’s Previous Movies

I have followed Nag Ashwin’s work since Mahanati. If you haven’t seen it, you can check out our other reviews on hdfolders.com. Mahanati was a very emotional and grounded film. It focused on human feelings and drama.

In Kalki 2898 AD, the scale is much bigger. This is a huge leap for him as a director. While Mahanati was perfect in its pacing, I felt this movie struggled a bit in the first half. It felt like he was trying to show too much at once. But in terms of vision, he has surpassed his old work. He has proved he can handle a massive budget and complex visual effects.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side, which is very important for a movie like this. I watched the 4K version, and the quality is top-notch.

4K Resolution and Color Grading

The 4K resolution is very clean. I did not see any noise in the dark scenes. The color grading is also impressive. They used a lot of gold and brown tones for the desert scenes. These colors look very rich on an HDR screen. The shadows are deep and black, which makes the CGI look more real.

Hindi Dubbing Quality

The Hindi dubbing is a big point for me. Usually, South Indian movies dubbed in Hindi feel a bit off. In this movie, the dubbing is mostly good. The lip-sync matches well in most scenes. However, I really missed Sharad Kelkar’s voice for Prabhas. The new voice is okay, but it doesn’t have that same power. Amitabh Bachchan voiced himself, which is a huge plus. His Hindi is perfect and adds a lot of weight to the movie.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? My answer is a big YES.

If you have a good home theater or a 4K TV, you must watch it in high resolution. The visual effects and the world-building are meant for the big screen experience. If you watch it on a phone or in low quality, you will miss the small details in the background.

However, the story is a bit long. I don’t think I would watch the whole movie again very soon. I might just re-watch the climax and the Mahabharata scenes. It is a great visual experience, but the slow pace makes it hard to watch multiple times.

Conclusion

Kalki 2898 AD is a brave attempt at making a global-scale sci-fi movie in India. It has great visuals, a strong performance by Amitabh Bachchan, and a cool concept. The Hindi dubbing is decent, though it could be better for the lead role. I hope the next part has a faster pace.
