Kalki 2898 AD Movie Review: A Grand Vision with a Few Flaws

I finally watched Kalki 2898 AD on a big screen, and I have a lot to say. This movie has been the talk of the town for months. I went in with high hopes because the trailers looked massive. It is rare to see Indian cinema try something this big in the sci-fi genre. After sitting through the whole film, I feel it is a mix of great ideas and some slow moments.

The story mixes our ancient history with a dark future. I liked how the director brought the world of Mahabharata into a high-tech world. Prabhas plays Bhairava, and Amitabh Bachchan plays Ashwatthama. In my opinion, Mr. Bachchan stole the show. He looks powerful and his action scenes are very good for his age.

Comparing Nag Ashwin’s Work

Nag Ashwin is a director who loves details. I remember watching his previous film, Mahanati, which was a masterpiece. That movie was a simple biopic, but it had a lot of heart. In Kalki 2898 AD, he tries something much harder.

Compared to his old work, this film feels much bigger but a bit less emotional. In Mahanati, I felt a connection to the characters. Here, I felt the world-building was the main star. Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I want to talk about the technical side because that is very important for a movie like this. I watched the 4K version, and let me tell you, it looks clean. The color grading is mostly grey and orange to show a dying world. It looks very real. The CGI is mostly good, though a few parts look a bit like a video game.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing. Usually, South Indian movies dubbed in Hindi feel a bit weird. The lip-sync is often off. However, in Kalki 2898 AD, the Hindi dubbing is quite good. I noticed that the voices chosen for Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan match their personalities well.

The lip-sync is about 90% perfect. There are only a few scenes where the words don’t match the mouth movements. The Hindi dialogues are simple and don’t use too many hard words. I liked that the dubbing team didn’t make it sound like a cartoon. It felt like a proper Bollywood movie.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? My answer is a big yes. If you have a good TV or a 4K monitor, you should watch it in high resolution. The world of Shambala and the Complex looks amazing in 4K. The small details in the armor and the ships are worth seeing.

If you watch it on a small phone screen, you will miss the scale of the movie. However, is the story worth watching many times? Maybe not. The first half is a bit slow. I found myself waiting for the action to start. But the last 30 minutes are gold. I would say watch it once in 4K for the experience.

Conclusion

Overall, I enjoyed Kalki 2898 AD. It is not a perfect movie, but it is a brave attempt. The acting by the main cast is solid. The visuals are the best we have seen in India for a long time. The Hindi dubbing makes it easy for everyone to enjoy. I hope the next part has more pace and more heart.
