I recently sat down to watch the 4K version of Kohra (1993). If you grew up in the 90s, you probably remember this movie. It stars Armaan Kohli and Ayesha Jhulka. It is a remake of the classic story Rebecca. I was curious to see how this old thriller looks in high resolution today.

The Story and Feel

The movie starts with a simple plot. Amit (Armaan Kohli) is a rich man who meets Nisha (Ayesha Jhulka). They fall in love and get married quickly. Amit takes her to his big mansion. But there is a catch. The memory of his first wife, Kohra, still haunts the house.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

This is the most important part of the review. I watched the 4K remastered version. I must say, the picture is very clean. The grains are gone. The colors look very real and natural. The dark scenes in the mansion look much better now. You can see the details in the background clearly.

But I have some issues with the audio. The Hindi dubbing quality is a bit disappointing. In the 4K version, the video is so sharp that you notice mistakes easily. I saw many scenes where the lip-sync did not match at all. It feels like the voices were recorded in a studio much later.

The background music is also very loud. Sometimes, the music drowns out the dialogue. I really wish they had cleaned up the audio as much as they cleaned the video. If you are a fan of perfect sound, this might bother you.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Is Kohra worth watching in 4K? I have mixed feelings. If you love 90s nostalgia, you will enjoy the beautiful visuals. The 4K upgrade makes the old sets look grand. It is a fun trip down memory lane.

However, if you are looking for a modern thriller, this might feel slow. The bad lip-syncing makes it hard to stay focused. I think this is a one-time watch for most people. Watch it for the songs and Ayesha Jhulka’s performance. But don’t expect a technical masterpiece.

Conclusion

Kohra is a decent thriller from a golden era of Bollywood. Partho Ghosh did a good job with the atmosphere. The 4K scan is a treat for the eyes, but a letdown for the ears. The Hindi dubbing really needed more work to match the new visual quality. It is a nice movie to watch on a rainy weekend if you have nothing else to do.
