Dancer Movie Review: Akshay Kumar’s First Superhit

I recently revisited the movie Dancer, which released back in 1991. Most people know Akshay Kumar as the “Khiladi” of Bollywood. But before the big action hits, he gave us this musical drama. However, I have some thoughts on the Hindi dubbing. Since this was an early 90s film, the audio technology was not great. I noticed that the Hindi dubbing does not always match the lip-sync. In some scenes, the dialogue starts a second late. This can be a bit annoying if you pay close attention. I also felt the background score was sometimes too loud. It almost drowned out the voices. If you are a fan of high-quality audio, you might find this part a bit weak.

Comparison with Other Movies by Kishore Vyas

The director, Kishore Vyas, had a very specific style. He liked making movies with strong social themes. For example, he also directed Zakhmi Aurat. That movie was much darker and more serious. Compared to that, I feel Dancer is much lighter and more commercial.

In Dancer, the focus is on music and stardom. In his other works, he focused more on justice. I think he handled Akshay Kumar’s debut phase very well. Now, the big question. Should you watch this in 4K or is it just a one-time view? I think if you are a die-hard Akshay Kumar fan, you will love the 4K version. It is great to see his early days in such high quality. The songs like “Nacho Nache” look very good on a big screen.

But for a casual viewer, I would say it is a one-time view. The story is quite predictable. The technical flaws in the dubbing might bother you. I feel it is a good movie for nostalgia. It is not a masterpiece, but it is fun.
