Shatranj 4K Movie Review: Jackie Shroff, Mithun & Divya Bharti Classic

I just finished watching the 4K version of the 1993 film Shatranj. It was quite a nostalgic ride for me. Seeing stars like Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, and the late Divya Bharti in high definition felt special. Back in the 90s, we watched these movies on blurry VHS tapes or cable TV. Now, seeing every detail on a big screen is a different experience altogether.

The Story and the Star Power

The movie is a classic masala entertainer. Mithun and Jackie play brothers in this film. Their chemistry is the heart of the story. Divya Bharti looks very beautiful on screen. Juhi Chawla also adds a lot of charm to the movie.

The plot is a mix of revenge, family drama, and big action scenes. I felt that the story is typical for its time. But the star power makes it worth watching even today. You don’t see this kind of casting in modern movies anymore. I really liked how the director balanced the two lead heroes.

Director Aziz Sejawal’s Style

Aziz Sejawal directed Shatranj. If you have seen his other movies like Adharm or Dil Hi To Hai, you know his style. He likes making movies that the common man enjoys. He focuses a lot on hero entries and emotional family scenes.

Compared to his other work, I think Shatranj has better pacing. It does not feel too long or boring. The songs are also placed well in the story. Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side of this 4K release. I was surprised by how clean the film looks now. The 4K resolution brings out a lot of hidden details. The colors look natural and real. They did not make the colors look fake or too bright. The skin tones of the actors look great.

However, I have some complaints about the Hindi dubbing quality. In some scenes, the lip-sync does not match the audio at all. This often happens when old films are remastered. I found it a bit distracting during the emotional scenes.

The background music is also very loud. Sometimes, it is hard to hear the dialogues clearly. I wish the technical team had cleaned up the audio tracks more. While the video is a 10/10, the audio feels like it belongs to the old days. I noticed some echoes in the indoor scenes which could have been fixed.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? If you are a big fan of Mithun or Jackie Shroff, then my answer is yes. Seeing them in such high quality is a real treat. The 4K resolution makes the action scenes look much better than the old DVD version.

But if you are not into 90s Bollywood, you might find it a bit loud. For me, it is a great movie to watch on a Sunday afternoon. It is more than just a one-time view if you love that era of cinema. The presence of Divya Bharti makes it a must-watch for her fans. She had such a great screen presence.

Conclusion

I enjoyed revisiting this classic in its new avatar. The 4K upgrade gives the movie a fresh life. Despite the minor dubbing issues and audio sync problems, the performances keep you hooked. It reminds me of why these actors became such huge superstars. I miss the simple storytelling of that time.
