Indian (2001) Movie Review: Sunny Deol’s Action Blockbuster

If you love the classic “Dhai Kilo Ka Haat” era, you surely remember Indian (2001). This movie was a massive hit when it released. I recently re-watched it to see if it still holds up today. Sunny Deol plays DCP Raj Shekhar Azad, a tough honest cop. He is on a mission to clean the system. He fights terrorists and corrupt politicians with his signature style.

The Story and Sunny Deol’s Power

The plot of Indian (2001) is quite simple but very loud. It is about a cop who gets framed by his own father-in-law. Danny Denzongpa plays the villain, and he is great as always. I felt the action scenes were the highlight. Sunny Deol shouting at the top of his lungs still gives me goosebumps. Comparison with N. Maharajan’s Work

Director N. Maharajan made this movie as a remake of his own Tamil film, Vallarasu. When I compare the two, the Hindi version feels much bigger. However, Maharajan’s style is very typical of the early 2000s. He loves slow-motion shots and high-pitched background music. Compared to his other films, this one feels more polished. He knew how to use Sunny Deol’s image perfectly. It’s not a deep movie, but it is a fun one.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side of the 4K version. I saw the remastered print, and I have mixed feelings. The 4K resolution makes the frames look very sharp. You can see the details on Sunny’s face clearly. The color grading is okay, but it looks a bit too saturated in some scenes. It does not feel like a modern movie, but it looks better than the old DVDs.

I have to be honest about the Hindi dubbing quality. Even though this is a Bollywood movie, it feels like a dubbed South Indian film. This is because many supporting actors were likely speaking in a different language on set. The lip-sync for the side characters is quite poor. In many scenes, the words do not match the lip movements at all. The voice-overs for the crowd and smaller villains feel very fake. I found this quite distracting. It takes away the realism from the movie. The main stars are fine, but the overall dubbing feels rushed.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it a 4K Watch?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? Well, it depends on your taste. If you are a hardcore Sunny Deol fan, you will enjoy the clarity. The action looks good in high definition. However, for a regular viewer, I think this is just a one-time view. The story is quite dated now. The poor dubbing for the side cast makes it feel like a low-budget project sometimes. I would say watch it on TV or a regular streaming platform first. You don’t need to hunt for the 4K disc unless you want to see the “Hand Pump” style action in high detail.

Conclusion

Indian is a classic “Masala” film from my childhood. It has great songs and powerful dialogues. Sunny Deol is the soul of this movie. But the technical flaws like bad lip-sync and loud background noise are hard to ignore. It is a good movie for a Sunday afternoon with your family. Just don’t expect it to look like a modern blockbuster.

My Rating: 3/5
