Yeh Desh (1984) Movie Review: Jeetendra and Kamal Haasan’s Action Classic

I recently revisited the 1984 classic Yeh Desh (1984) on a lazy Sunday afternoon. This film is a heavy-duty political drama. It features the “Jumping Jack” Jeetendra and the legendary Kamal Haasan. I have always loved 80s Bollywood for its raw energy and loud dialogues. This movie is a perfect example of that era. It tells a story about corruption, politics, and the fight for justice.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side of this movie. I watched a restored version that claimed to be in high resolution. The 4K version looks surprisingly good for a film that is 40 years old. The colors are bold and bright. The black levels are deep, which makes the night scenes look clear. My eyes didn’t hurt while watching the fast action sequences.

However, I have a big complaint about the Hindi dubbing quality. Since this was a remake of a Malayalam film, the dubbing feels rushed. I noticed that the lip-sync is quite poor in many scenes. When Kamal Haasan speaks, his lips move differently than the Hindi words we hear. This can be very distracting for a viewer.

The background score is also a bit too loud. It sometimes drowns out the actual dialogues. I wish the sound engineers had done a better job with the audio mixing. It takes away from the great acting. Is Yeh Desh (1984) worth watching in 4K? I would say yes, but only if you are a hardcore fan of 80s cinema. The visual upgrade makes the sets and costumes look very real. You can see the details in Jeetendra’s outfits and Sridevi’s beautiful sarees.

But for a casual viewer, this might just be a one-time view. The story is good, but the bad dubbing might annoy you. It is a great film to watch with your parents for some nostalgia. I enjoyed the nostalgic trip, but I don’t think I will watch it again soon.
