Toofan (1989) Movie Review: Amitabh Bachchan’s Action Blockbuster

I remember watching Toofan as a kid on a grainy CRT television. Seeing Amitabh Bachchan in a superhero cape was a huge deal back then. Released in 1989, this movie is a classic example of old-school Bollywood masala. It features the legendary Big B in a double role. One is a brave superhero with a crossbow, and the other is a quirky magician named Shyam. If you love 80s action, this movie is a nostalgic trip.

The Story and Characters

The plot is quite simple but entertaining. Amitabh Bachchan plays two characters who are twins separated at birth. Toofan is the protector of the people. He has a cool costume and a magical crossbow. On the other hand, Shyam is a simple guy trying to make a living as a magician.

I think Amitabh Bachchan carried the whole film on his shoulders. His energy in the action scenes is amazing. Even the funny scenes as Shyam the magician made me laugh. The villain, played by Amrish Puri, is as scary as ever. He is the perfect match for a hero like Toofan.

Comparison with Ketan Desai’s Other Films

Ketan Desai directed this film. He is the son of the legendary Manmohan Desai. If you have seen movies like Mard or Coolie, you will see a similar style here. You can check more about his work on Wikipedia.

I feel Ketan tried hard to copy his father’s “lost and found” formula. While Toofan is fun, it doesn’t quite reach the level of Amar Akbar Anthony. It feels a bit loud and over-the-top at times. However, the madness is what makes it a fun watch for a Sunday afternoon. We have reviewed other 80s classics at hdfolders.com that you should check out too.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Let’s talk about the 4K restoration and the sound. I watched the remastered version recently. The 4K resolution makes the colors look very sharp. The gold on Toofan’s outfit looks bright and shiny. The skin tones look much more real now. They have fixed the grain, so the picture looks clean.

However, I noticed some issues with the Hindi dubbing quality. Back in 1989, movies used “sync sound” less often. Most actors recorded their lines later in a studio. In this 4K version, the lip-sync feels a bit off in some scenes.

The audio track is loud, but the background music sometimes hides the dialogues. I found the dubbing for the side characters to be a bit weak. It feels like the voices don’t always match the emotions on screen. But Amitabh’s voice is still deep and powerful. It saves the movie’s overall feel.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Is this movie worth watching in 4K? I would say yes, but only if you are a huge Amitabh Bachchan fan. The high resolution makes the action scenes look much better. You can see the details of the stunts clearly.

However, if you are not into old Bollywood logic, this might be a one-time view for you. The story is predictable and some scenes feel very dated. But for a nostalgia trip, the 4K version is definitely the best way to see it. It looks way better than the old DVDs we used to have.

Conclusion

Overall, Toofan is a loud, proud, and fun action movie. It has everything—magic, revenge, and a superhero hero. The technical upgrade to 4K is great for the eyes. But the dubbing and sound quality could have been better. It is a great piece of Indian cinema history that every Big B fan should watch at least once.
