Deedar E Yaar Movie Review: Rekha and Rishi Kapoor’s Classic Drama

I recently watched the classic movie Deedar E Yaar again. This film stars Rekha, Rishi Kapoor, and Jeetendra. It is a typical Muslim social drama from the early 80s. I remember seeing clips of this movie on TV. But watching the full version was a different experience. It brings back the old days of Bollywood. The movie has a lot of emotions, big sets, and many songs. I felt like I was back in 1982 while watching it.

The Story and Performances

The story is about two friends, Javed and Akhtar. Rishi Kapoor and Jeetendra play these roles. They both fall in love with the same woman, played by Tina Munim. Rekha plays a beautiful dancer who also gets involved in this love circle. I think Rishi Kapoor was great in this role. He looks very young and full of energy.

Rekha looks stunning in every scene. Her costumes are very heavy and look very expensive. I liked her grace in the dance numbers. Jeetendra also did a good job, though his style is very different from Rishi’s. The movie focuses a lot on friendship and giving up your love for a friend. This was a very popular theme back then. Comparing Deedar E Yaar with H.S. Rawail’s Classics

The director, H.S. Rawail, was known for making grand films. He made famous movies like Mere Mehboob and Laila Majnu. If I compare Deedar E Yaar to Mere Mehboob, it feels a bit slow. Mere Mehboob had a much tighter script.

However, this movie still has that grand look Rawail is famous for. He knows how to show Urdu culture on screen. The way characters talk is very poetic. At hdfolders.com, I have reviewed many other movies by such classic directors. I feel Rawail tried to repeat his old magic here. He succeeded in the looks but failed a bit in the pacing. The movie is quite long, and I felt it could have been shorter.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the remastered 4K version of this movie. I must say, the color grading is quite good. The red and gold colors in the sets look very clear now. The picture is sharp, and you can see the details on the actors’ faces.

However, I have some complaints about the Hindi dubbing quality. In many scenes, the Hindi dubbing does not match the lip-sync at all. I noticed that the audio feels like it was recorded in a studio much later. It does not feel like a natural part of the scene.

In some emotional parts, the voice is too loud, but the actor’s mouth is barely moving. This happens a lot in these old remastered versions. The background music also sometimes hides the dialogues. I found this quite distracting. If you are a fan of clear audio, this might bother you.

Viewer’s Verdict

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? I would say it depends. If you are a huge fan of Rekha or Rishi Kapoor, you should see it in 4K. The visuals are worth it. But if you are just looking for a good story, it might feel like a one-time view.

The slow pace and the dubbing issues make it hard to watch again and again. I enjoyed the songs, but the drama felt a bit too much at times. It is a good film to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. But do not expect it to be as good as Laila Majnu.

Conclusion

Overall, Deedar E Yaar is a beautiful-looking film with some flaws. The 4K upgrade makes it look fresh, but the audio ruins the fun a bit. The performances are solid, and the music is decent. It is a piece of Bollywood history that shows how grand movies used to be.
