Shagird (शागिर्द) 4K Review: Joy Mukherjee and Saira Banu’s Rom-Com Classic

I recently watched the 4K version of the 1967 classic movie Shagird. This film stars Joy Mukherjee and Saira Banu in the lead roles. It is a light-hearted romantic comedy that takes you back to the golden era of Bollywood. If you enjoy old-school charm and great music, this movie is a must-see.

The Story and Performances

The plot is quite simple but very funny. Joy Mukherjee plays a young man who wants to learn how to woo girls. He takes lessons from his professor, played by I.S. Johar. Things get complicated when both fall for the same girl, played by Saira Banu.

I really liked Joy Mukherjee’s energy in this film. He was known as the “Joy” of Indian cinema for a reason. Saira Banu looks incredibly beautiful in every frame. Her chemistry with Joy feels natural and sweet. I think this is one of her best performances from the 60s. You can read more about the cast and plot on the official Shagird Wikipedia page.

Comparing the Director’s Work

Samir Ganguly directed this movie. He was a master at making clean family entertainers. I would say Shagird is his most famous work. If you compare it to his other films like Shararat, this one feels more alive. The pacing is fast and the jokes still land well today. He knew how to use the “Professor-Student” trope perfectly. Most of his movies have a similar feel, but this one stands out because of the music.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the 4K restoration. I was quite impressed with the picture quality. The 4K resolution makes the old sets look very clear. The colors are bright and do not look faded at all. I could see the fine details on Saira Banu’s costumes. The skin tones look real and not overly edited.

However, I have mixed feelings about the Hindi dubbing and audio sync. In many 4K restorations of old films, the audio gets a bit messy. In Shagird, the dialogue is mostly clear. But I noticed that in a few scenes, the lip-sync was slightly off. It feels like the audio was cleaned up separately from the video.

The songs, however, sound amazing. “Dil Wil Pyar Wyar” sounds very crisp in this version. The Hindi dubbing quality for the singing parts is top-notch. But for some high-pitched dialogues, I felt the background hiss was still there. It is not a deal-breaker, but you will notice it if you use headphones. We have discussed similar audio issues in our other reviews on hdfolders.com.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Is this movie worth watching in 4K? I would say yes. If you are a fan of 1960s Bollywood, the 4K version is a treat for the eyes. The visual upgrade is huge. It is not just a one-time watch. You can revisit it for the beautiful songs and the colorful locations.

The comedy is still fresh. The “Padosi” angle is very funny. However, if you are someone who only likes modern action movies, you might find it a bit slow. For me, the nostalgia factor makes it a winner. The 4K clarity makes it feel like the movie was shot just a few years ago.

Conclusion

Shagird is a bright and happy film. The 4K restoration brings new life to this classic. Despite minor lip-sync issues in the Hindi dubbing, the overall experience is great. I highly recommend it for a weekend family movie night.

  5. Don't know why Shefali is portrayed as a negative character in the movie. Urvashi Dutta nailed the role. Unfortunately, there is not much about her on the web except Fear (1965) short film that is available on YouTube, which was directed Ritwik Ghatak.

  6. Shagird is a weird film. Luckily the chemistry between Joy Mukherji and Saira Banu and some funny moments provide relief. The songs are hummable although not the chartbuster kind. Nasir Hussain Asit Sen and Achla Sachdev also help provide some light-hearted fun but IS Johar has the weirdest role of a middle-aged professor who despises marriage and then falls in love with his student's girlfriend even though she calls him Chachaji. That entire track falls flat as does Madan Puri's villainy.
