Anmol Movie Review: Rishi Kapoor & Manisha Koirala’s Bollywood Blockbuster

I recently sat down to rewatch the 1993 film Anmol. This movie features Rishi Kapoor and Manisha Koirala in lead roles. It is a story that many of us remember from our childhood. The film is basically a Bollywood version of the classic Cinderella story. I wanted to see if it still holds up today. After watching it again, I have a lot of thoughts to share with you all.

My Experience with the Story

I think the story of Anmol is very simple and sweet. Rishi Kapoor plays a rich man who falls in love with a poor girl. Manisha Koirala plays the role of a girl who is treated badly by her stepfamily. I felt that Manisha looked very innocent in this movie. Her acting felt very natural for that time. Rishi Kapoor, as always, brought a lot of charm to his character.

The movie has a lot of drama. It has songs, tears, and a happy ending. I liked how the director showed the struggle of the main character. It makes you feel for her. If you enjoy old-school romance, you will find this movie very likable.

How It Compares to Ketan Desai’s Other Films

Ketan Desai directed this film. He is the son of the famous director Manmohan Desai. I have seen his other movies like Toofan and Allah Rakha. When I compare Anmol to those films, I see a big difference. Toofan was very loud and full of action. Allah Rakha was also a typical masala movie.

However, I feel Anmol is much more grounded. It focuses on emotions rather than big stunts. I think Ketan tried to do something different here. He moved away from his father’s “lost and found” formula. I liked this change. You can read more about similar old classics in our other movie reviews on this site.

Technical Quality and Hindi Dubbing

I watched the digital version of this film recently. I want to talk about the technical side of things. I noticed that the color grading in the new 4K scans is quite good. The colors look sharp and clean. The reds and greens of the outfits look very nice on screen.

I also paid close attention to the Hindi dubbing quality. Back in the 90s, actors often dubbed their voices in a studio after filming. In some scenes of Anmol, I found that the lip-sync was a bit off. There are moments where the dialogue starts a split second before the actor moves their lips.

The audio quality is also a bit mixed. The background music is sometimes too loud. It makes it hard to hear what Rishi Kapoor is saying. But the songs sound great. The music by Raamlaxman is a high point. If you are a fan of clear audio, you might find the sync issues a bit annoying.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K or One-Time Watch?

Is Anmol worth a 4K watch? I would say it depends. If you are a huge fan of Rishi Kapoor, you should see it in high resolution. His screen presence is amazing. The 4K version makes the movie look very fresh.

But for a regular viewer, this might be a one-time watch. The story is predictable. We have seen many movies like this before. It is a good film to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It gives you that warm, nostalgic feeling. However, it is not a masterpiece that you need to own in 4K.

Conclusion

I had a good time watching Anmol again. It is a simple story told with a lot of heart. The chemistry between the lead actors is the best part. While the technical dubbing has some flaws, the music makes up for it. It is a nice trip down memory lane for any Bollywood lover.

My Rating: 3/5
