I recently sat down to rewatch the classic Mithun Chakraborty film, Ahankaar. If you grew up in the 90s, you know Mithun Da was a legend. This movie brings back so many memories of old Bollywood drama. It stars Mithun Chakraborty, Mamta Kulkarni, and a very smart monkey friend.

However, I noticed some issues with the Hindi dubbing. Even though this is a Hindi movie, the remastered audio feels a bit off. In some scenes, the lip-sync does not match the sound perfectly. It feels like the dialogue was recorded again or cleaned up too much. My experience with the audio was a bit mixed. The background music is loud, which sometimes hides the actors’ voices. If you are a fan of 90s action movies, you might notice this easily.

Comparing Ashim Samanta’s Direction

The director, Ashim Samanta, has a specific style. He likes making family dramas with a lot of emotions. If you compare Ahankaar to his other film, Aamne Samne, you see a pattern. He loves showing the struggle between good and evil within a family.

I feel Ahankaar is more emotional than his other works. In Main Awara Hoon, the focus was more on romance. But here, the focus is on the bond between a man and his pet. I think Ashim Samanta handled the emotional scenes well. Mithun Da’s performance is much better here than in some of his lower-budget action films.

Why Mithun Da Still Shines

Mithun Chakraborty is the soul of this movie. He plays the “poor but honest” man perfectly. I loved his chemistry with Mamta Kulkarni. She looks beautiful and does her job well. But the real star is the monkey. Their scenes together are funny and touching.

I liked how the movie shows that money can change people. It is a lesson that is still true today. The villains, like Mohnish Bahl and Prem Chopra, are great at making you hate them. They play their roles with a lot of energy.

Is this movie worth watching in 4K? I would say it depends. If you are a die-hard Mithun fan, you will love the clear visuals. The 4K version makes the old sets look very fresh.

But for a regular viewer, this is a one-time watch. The story is a bit old-fashioned. The dubbing issues can be annoying if you look closely. It is a good movie for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
