I recently sat down to watch Moksha, a film that marked Arjun Rampal’s big entry into Bollywood. This movie also stars the talented Manisha Koirala. It is not your typical masala flick. It tries to be deep and philosophical. The story follows Vikram, an ambitious lawyer who wants to change the education system. However, his life takes a dark turn when he gets involved in a bank robbery and a murder.

Arjun Rampal and the Murder Mystery

The big question in the film is: why is Arjun Rampal suspected of Manisha Koirala’s murder? In the movie, Vikram loves Ritika (played by Manisha). I watched the remastered version to see how it looks today. The 4K resolution is surprisingly good for a film from 2001. The colors are not too bright; they feel very earthy and real. The cinematographer-turned-director Ashok Mehta used a lot of shadows.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing and sound. Since this was a Hindi film, I focused on the ADR (sync-sound) quality. In many scenes, I noticed the lip-sync was slightly off. This happens often with older films during post-production. The background score is quite loud, sometimes hiding the dialogues. I felt the voice levels were not balanced well in the 4K print. Ashok Mehta’s Vision vs Other Films

Ashok Mehta was a legendary cinematographer. This was his directorial debut. If you compare Moksha to other films he worked on, like 36 Chowringhee Lane, you see a pattern. He loves visual storytelling more than the script. The movie feels like a long painting. However, the pacing is much slower than modern thrillers. It reminded me of some artistic films from the 90s. It lacks the fast speed of today’s crime dramas.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is Moksha worth a 4K watch? I would say it depends. If you are a fan of Arjun Rampal’s early work, the 4K version is great. You can see the details in the forest scenes and the court. But if you want a fast-paced thriller, this might feel boring. For most people, this is a one-time view. The story is a bit heavy and the philosophy can get confusing. I liked the visuals more than the actual plot.

Moksha is a brave attempt at making a meaningful film. It has great music and looks amazing for its time. The mystery of the murder keeps you interested for a while.
