I recently revisited the 1993 movie Shatranj on a lazy Sunday afternoon. This film is a classic mix of comedy, action, and 90s drama. Compared to Ilaaka, this movie feels much lighter. It does not try to be a deep crime drama. It just wants to entertain you. Sejawal has a specific style. Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the 4K version and the audio. I watched the restored version recently. The 4K resolution makes a big difference. The images are much sharper now. I could see the patterns on the actors’ clothes clearly. The color grading is also better. The old washed-out look is gone. Now, the colors look rich and real.

However, I had a big issue with the Hindi dubbing. Even though this is a Hindi movie, the audio sync in the restored version is bad. In many scenes, the Hindi dubbing does not match the lip-sync at all. It feels like the voices were recorded separately in a studio much later.

The background music is sometimes too loud. It hides the dialogues. I found this very annoying. I expected the 4K restoration to fix the sound too. But the audio quality feels old. It does not feel like “High Definition” sound. The voices sound a bit thin. This ruins the experience of watching it on a big home theater.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Should you watch this in 4K? I have mixed feelings. If you are a huge fan of Mithun or Divya Bharti, the 4K visuals are a treat. You will love seeing them in such high quality. The colors are great for a 30-year-old movie.

But if you care about sound, the dubbing issues might bother you. The lip-sync errors are hard to ignore. For most people, I think this is a one-time view. You can watch it for nostalgia. You don’t need a high-end 4K screen to enjoy the jokes. A regular version would also work fine.

Conclusion

This movie is a fun trip down memory lane. I liked the acting and the simple story. The technical restoration is good for the eyes but bad for the ears. The Hindi dubbing sync is the weakest part of this 4K release.
