Taal Movie Review: Aishwarya Rai’s Classic Bollywood Romance

I recently sat down to re-watch Taal, a movie that defined the late 90s for many of us. This film stars Aishwarya Rai, Akshaye Khanna, and Anil Kapoor. It is a musical love story directed by Subhash Ghai. I remember watching it as a kid, but seeing it now feels different. The songs by A.R. Rahman are still the heartbeat of this movie. I truly believe this is one of the most beautiful looking films in Indian cinema.

The Story and Subhash Ghai’s Magic

I have always liked how Subhash Ghai tells a story. He is known as the “Showman” of Bollywood. In my opinion, Taal is more refined than his other hits like Ram Lakhan. While his older movies were loud and full of action, this one is soft.

I think Taal is a lot like Pardes, which we reviewed earlier. Both movies show the clash between Indian values and Western life. However, I liked the chemistry between Akshaye and Aishwarya more in this film. Anil Kapoor as Vikrant Kapoor steals every scene he is in. He brings a lot of energy to the second half.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the new 4K restored version of the film. I must say, the picture looks very clean now. The hills of Chamba look beautiful. The color grading is much better than the old DVDs. The whites look bright and the skin tones look natural.

However, I noticed some issues with the Hindi dubbing quality. Since this was made in 1999, the “sync sound” technology was not common. Actors had to record their voices later in a studio. In some scenes, I felt the lip-sync was a bit off.

My biggest complaint is with the background noise in the dubbing. Sometimes the voice sounds too loud for the room. It feels a bit detached from the environment. If you watch it on a good sound system, you might notice these tiny gaps. But the music is so good that I ignored these small flaws. The 4K resolution really makes Aishwarya’s dance sequences look like a painting.

My Experience with the Music

I cannot talk about Taal without mentioning A.R. Rahman. I think this is his best work for a Hindi movie. Every song is a hit. “Ishq Bina” and “Nahin Saamne” are my favorites. I found myself humming the tunes even after the movie ended. The way the songs are shot is very grand. It shows the scale of movies we don’t see much today. I feel the songs are the main reason people still love this film.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is Taal worth a 4K watch? I would say yes. If you are a fan of 90s nostalgia, you must see it in high quality. The visuals of the rain and the mountains are worth the extra pixels.

However, if you don’t care about cinematography, it might feel like a slow watch. The first half is a bit dragging. But for the music and Aishwarya Rai’s screen presence, I would watch it again. It is not just a one-time view for me. It is a movie I go back to when I want to feel calm.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed revisitng this classic. It has great music, good acting, and a simple story. Even though the Hindi dubbing has some sync issues, the overall experience is great. I wish modern movies had this kind of soul. It is a must-watch for anyone who loves old-school romance.

My Rating: 4/5
