Aatank Hi Aatank (2022) is the Hindi dubbed version of the Tamil film Maaran. I finally sat down to watch it recently. I have always been a big fan of Dhanush. His acting is usually top-class. After the success of his other dubbed hits, I wanted to see if this one lives up to the hype. The movie follows a brave journalist who fights against a corrupt politician. It has action, emotion, and a lot of drama.

The Story in Short

I liked the basic plot. Dhanush plays Maaran, a guy who follows his father’s footsteps. His father was a truthful journalist. Maaran is also very honest. He does not fear anyone. The story shows his strong bond with his sister. Things take a turn when he exposes a scam. This scam involves a big political leader. The rest of the movie is about how he saves his family. Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing. This is where I have mixed feelings. The voice chosen for Dhanush is good. It matches his tough personality. However, the lip-sync is not perfect. In many scenes, the Hindi words kept playing even after Dhanush stopped talking. It feels a bit weird when that happens. The translation is also very simple. Some of the powerful Tamil dialogues felt a bit flat in Hindi. It didn’t have that “punch” I expected. If you are used to high-quality dubbing like in Pushpa, you might find this a bit average.

Comparing the Director’s Work

The movie is directed by Karthick Naren. I have followed his work since his debut. You can read more about his career on Wikipedia. His first movie, Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, was a brilliant thriller. It was smart and very tight. Compared to that, Aatank Hi Aatank feels a bit weak.

I expected more twists from him. This movie feels like a regular commercial film. It does not have the “magic” of his earlier projects. It seems like the director tried to make a mass entertainer instead of a smart mystery. I missed the clever storytelling that he is known for. What I Liked and What I Didn’t

I really liked Dhanush’s performance. He carries the whole movie on his shoulders. His chemistry with the actress Malavika Mohanan is sweet. The music by G.V. Prakash is also a big plus. The background score during action scenes is quite loud and energetic.

On the downside, the villain’s character was very weak. I didn’t feel any threat from him. The sister sentiment also felt a bit forced in some scenes. I wish the writing was a bit deeper. It felt like I had seen this story many times before.

Is it worth a 4K watch? My answer is yes, but only if you love Dhanush. The 4K print makes the action scenes look very good. The colors are bright and the details are sharp. However, if you are looking for a great story, this is just a one-time view. It is a decent movie to watch on a Sunday afternoon. You won’t regret watching it once, but you might not want to see it again.

Conclusion

Overall, Aatank Hi Aatank is a standard action drama. Dhanush is the main reason to watch it. The technical side is strong, but the script is average. The Hindi dubbing could have been much better in terms of lip-sync. It is not the best film of Karthick Naren, but it is not a bad film either.
