I recently sat down to watch the 2006 version of the movie Umrao Jaan. This film stars Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles. Many people always compare this to the old 1981 classic. I wanted to see if this version could stand on its own feet. It tells the story of a young girl sold into a brothel in Lucknow. She grows up to become a famous poetess and dancer.

JP Dutta’s Shift from War to Romance

I mostly know JP Dutta for his massive war movies. He made legendary films like Border. Those movies were full of action and loud energy. Watching him handle a soft, poetic romance like Umrao Jaan was a big change. I feel he tried to bring that same “grand” scale here. But honestly, it did not work as well as his earlier hits. His movie Refugee had a better balance of emotions. This movie feels much slower than his usual style. I think he struggled to keep the pace tight. Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched this movie in 4K resolution to see the details. The picture quality is quite good now. The colors of the heavy lehengas and jewelry look very rich. I liked how the gold tones pop on the screen. However, I have to talk about the Hindi dubbing and audio sync. Even though it is a Hindi film, the post-sync (ADR) felt very loose.

In many scenes, the lip-sync does not match the voices perfectly. I found this very distracting during the deep emotional dialogues. When Umrao recites her poetry, the voice feels like it is sitting “on top” of the video. It does not feel like it is coming from the character’s mouth. The background score is loud, but the dialogue clarity is sometimes low. For a 4K experience, I expected much better sound engineering. If you are sensitive to audio-to-video lag, you will notice this immediately.

The Performances and Music

I think Aishwarya Rai looked absolutely stunning. She worked hard on her expressions and dance moves. I felt she captured the sadness of Umrao quite well. Abhishek Bachchan looks very handsome as Nawab Sultan. Their real-life chemistry shows in some scenes. But the script is so long that their romance feels dragged out. The songs by Anu Malik are the best part of the film. I still hum “Dil Dooba” and “Salaam.” The music gives a nice old-world feel to the story.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? I would say no. The high resolution shows the beautiful sets. But the movie is nearly three hours long. The slow pace makes it hard to watch more than once. The issues with the Hindi dubbing also take away from the high-end experience. I think this is a one-time view for most people. If you are a huge fan of Aishwarya, you might like the 4K visuals. For everyone else, watching it once on a regular screen is enough.

Conclusion

I enjoyed the look of the film, but it lacked a soul. I felt the direction was too heavy for such a soft story. The technical errors in the audio sync were a big letdown for me. It is a beautiful-looking movie that feels a bit empty inside.
