Barsaat Ki Ek Raat Movie Review: अमिताभ बच्चन और अमजद खान की जबरदस्त जंग

I recently watched the classic movie Barsaat Ki Ek Raat on a lazy Sunday afternoon. This 1981 film features Amitabh Bachchan and Amjad Khan in a fierce face-off. If you love old-school Bollywood action and drama, this one is a must-watch.

The Story and the Rivalry

The movie is set in the beautiful hills and tea gardens. Amitabh Bachchan plays a simple man who stands up against a local bully. Amjad Khan plays the villain, Kaliram. I think their chemistry is what makes this movie special. Amjad Khan is truly scary in this role. He shows why he was the best villain of that era.

Amitabh Bachchan looks very young and intense. His character is a mix of a lover and a fighter. I really liked how the story builds up the tension between these two giants. The songs by R.D. Burman are another reason to watch this film. You can read more about the movie’s history on its Wikipedia page.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I want to talk about the technical side of the 4K version. The restoration is quite good. The green tea gardens look very fresh and real. The skin tones of the actors look natural too. I did not see much grain or noise in the dark scenes.

However, I have some thoughts on the Hindi dubbing. This movie was shot at the same time as a Bengali version called Anushandhan. Because of this, the Hindi dubbing feels a bit off in some places. I noticed that the lip-sync does not match perfectly in a few scenes.

The background score is loud and clear. But the voices sometimes feel like they were recorded in a closed room. It does not always match the open-air locations. If you are a fan of perfect audio, this might bother you a little. But for most fans, it is still a great experience.

Comparing Shakti Samanta’s Work

The director, Shakti Samanta, is a master of emotions. I have seen his other films like Aradhana and Amar Prem. You can find reviews of these classics on our site hdfolders.com.

Compared to his other hits, Barsaat Ki Ek Raat is more of an action-thriller. Aradhana was very soft and romantic. This movie is rugged and tough. I feel Shakti Samanta handled the action scenes very well here. He used the rainy atmosphere to create fear and suspense. It is quite different from his usual musical dramas.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Now, the main question is: should you watch this in 4K?

In my opinion, if you are a die-hard Amitabh Bachchan fan, go for the 4K version. The details on his face and the beautiful hilly scenery look great in high resolution. It feels like watching a new movie altogether.

But if you are just a casual viewer, a standard HD version is enough. The story is the main hero here. The dubbing issues become more visible in 4K. It is a great movie for a one-time watch with family. It brings back the magic of the 80s very well.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed the battle between Amitabh and Amjad Khan. The music is top-notch. The technical quality is good, but the Hindi dubbing could have been better. It is a solid entertainer from the golden age of cinema.

My Rating: 3.5/5

  5. Overall Rating 4 Stars out of 10 – Below Average Film

Review: A wicked and an incorrigible thug, Kaliram (Amjad Khan), and his depraved father, Hariya (Utpal Dutt), both in cahoots with the local police inspector, Samar (Asit Sen), all marked by corruption and who always get their own way, are finally stopped by an undercover cop, Inspector Abhijeet Rai (Amitabh Bachchan). Kaliram gets a 5 year jail sentence. On his release Kaliram thirsts for revenge. However, a predetermined course of events often held to be an irresistible power gets its own way, and Kaliram meets his fate at the hands of his own father.

The story script is just another hackneyed theme lacking in originality. Revenge by Kaliram isn’t inflicted with great force or vehemence to cause high anxiety, thereby lessening the acting prowess and reputation of Amjad as a villain. The film is full of clichés and nick-of-time arrivals, and there's nothing worse than a predictable story. Rajni (Raakhee) is a bit unconvincing as a blind. In normal circumstance a blind person would be more physically vulnerable, but instead she is portrayed as being terribly emotionally vulnerable, a defeatist character sobbing like a scared stiff child. She worships Durga Ma but there isn’t one iota of Shakti in her that Durga Ma uses against all negative forces of evil and wickedness. Amitabh’s role is lacking in vitality and so the actor gives a lackluster performance, going through the usual absurdities of a Bollywood film. Only the beautiful Prema Narayan, playing as Phulwa, brings some freshness full of vigor.

The movie is not artistic or exciting, and considering the film is produced and directed by Shakti Samanta, the film is really mediocre and disappointing. The soundtrack is below average with only one hit song. Other technical elements are average. By the closing of the movie, the viewers probably may not be inspired to identify themselves in any character, and there is no emotional connection allowing the message to take hold.

  6. Watching this 1983 movie in June 2022! It is interesting to note that Amjad, the rich villain uses an older model left hand drive Willys jeep while Amitabh the hero uses a newer model right hand drive Jeep, which must have been tarted up to look like an imported vehicle.

Rakhee turns in a superb performance as the blind lover of Amitabh. The storyline is straightforward, the two lovers are good guys while Amjad, the bad guy has designs on Rakhee. Amitabh, of course emerges the winner. The locations, direction, cinematography and acting makes a huge difference to the Bollywood formula. A watchable film.
