Badaltey Rishtey Movie Review: Jeetendra and Rishi Kapoor’s Classic Romance

I recently sat down to watch the classic 1978 film Badaltey Rishtey. This movie features three big stars of that era. You get to see Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor, and Reena Roy together. It is a typical family drama with a lot of emotions. If you like old-school Bollywood romances, this one might be on your list. I wanted to see how this old gem looks in today’s digital age.

The Story and My Thoughts

The plot of Badaltey Rishtey moves around a love triangle. Reena Roy plays a girl who has to choose between two men. One is a disciplined man played by Jeetendra. The other is a fun-loving person played by Rishi Kapoor. I felt the story was quite deep for its time. It talks about fate and how relationships change. You can read more about the cast and crew on the official Wikipedia page.

I really liked Rishi Kapoor’s energy in this movie. He brings a lot of life to the screen. Jeetendra, on the other hand, is very calm and serious. Their chemistry with Reena Roy is the heart of the film. The songs by Laxmikant-Pyarelal are still very catchy. I found myself humming “Meri Sanson Ko Jo” even after the movie ended.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side of this version. I watched a 4K restored print of the film. I must say, the colors look much better now. The outdoor scenes are bright and clear. However, the 4K resolution shows some flaws too. You can see the grain in some dark scenes. But for a movie from 1978, the cleanup is quite good.

I have to be honest about the Hindi dubbing and audio sync. Back then, actors used to record their lines after filming. In this digital version, I noticed some lip-sync issues. Sometimes the words do not match the lip movements perfectly. It feels a bit odd in high definition. The audio quality is decent, but it lacks the punch of modern films. If you are a fan of high-quality sound, you might feel disappointed here. I have noticed similar issues in other reviews on hdfolders.com, especially with old classic remasters.

Comparison with Director R. Jhalani’s Other Works

The director, R. Jhalani, was known for making emotional dramas. If you compare Badaltey Rishtey to his other hit, Anamika, you will see a pattern. He loves focusing on the female lead’s struggle. In Anamika, the mystery was the main hook. In this movie, the sacrifice is the main theme.

I feel Badaltey Rishtey is more grounded than his other films. It does not try to be a thriller. It stays as a pure romantic drama. Compared to Uljhan, I think this movie has better music. The pacing is a bit slow, but it keeps you hooked to the characters.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? Well, it depends on your taste. If you are a die-hard fan of Rishi Kapoor or Jeetendra, you will love the clarity. The faces look sharp and the costumes look great.

However, for a regular viewer, I would say this is a one-time view. The story is a bit dated. The audio sync problems in the Hindi dubbing can be distracting. You don’t really need 4K to enjoy a simple family drama like this. A standard HD version would work just fine.

Conclusion

Badaltey Rishtey is a sweet trip down memory lane. I enjoyed the performances and the classic songs. The 4K restoration is good but not perfect. The lip-sync issues are a bit of a letdown. But overall, it is a solid film from the golden era of Bollywood.

My Rating: 3.5/5

  2. इस फिल्म के लेखक, गीतकार, संगीतकार और निर्माता, निर्देशक आप सभी को बहुत बहुत धन्यवाद है.यह फिल्म देखी बहुत हीअचछी लगी.

  3. Raghunath Jhalani changed his name and began to use his first initial along with his last name presumably for astrological reasons. In Badaltey Rishtey these very beliefs come into play, where a woman, Savitri is given a prediction that her husband would likely die within 40 days of marriage. That prediction has disastrous consequences for her. Savitri is wooed relentlessly by Manohar a hard working orphan who is full of life and vigor. Ultimately, she falls for his charms but at the same time rich family friend Sagar also falls for her. Savitri’s brother Chander has a fiancée whose father is a very accurate astrologer. All the predictions he makes for the family begin to come true, but he has a dark prediction for Savitri which he shares only with his daughter. But the daughter (who is best friends with Savitri) spills the beans partly when Manohar has a terrible skiing accident and consequently, Savitri decides to not get married. But under pressure at home, she relents and agrees to marry Sagar. Aghast her friend now tells her the whole prediction. Savitri then informs Sagar about this, but he does not believe in these predictions. They marry. Until this time the film is excellent. Jhalani around this time had made the very successful Anamika and Uljhan. He handles all the sequences very confidently making the proceedings simple and natural. The second half though chooses a weird path as Manohar turns into a villain and begins to plot Sagar’s death and also pressurize Savitri to return to him. Of course, in the end everyone comes clean. But because of the weird second half Badaltey Rishtey stops short of being brilliant. The first half is so good. The interactions between all the family members, the way Manohar tries to befriend Savitri, the predictions, all of it is handled so effortlessly. I wish the makers had thought of a better way to handle the second hour of the film. Still the film is very entertaining and keeps you engrossed in the proceedings. In support roles Asrani, Shubha Khote, AK Hangal, Dina Pathak, Urmila Bhatt and others do a good job. Its nice to see someone like Pinchoo Kapoor play a good character. Rishi Kapoor has donned the lover boy’s role several times. His Manohar does not break new ground in the first half. But he looks equally at ease doing the negative part in the second half. Jeetendra looking very young puts in one of his better performances as Sagar. He really looks the part. Reena Roy lives the role of Savitri. After several actresses rejected Nagin, that film fell into her lap, became a superhit and made her a star. So around this time she was the golden girl at the box office. She acts beautifully. Savitri has several layers to her character and Reena handles them with ease. The locales of Himachal Pradesh and nicely captured. Laxmikant Pyarelal give some soulful and sprightly music. There is Meri Saanson mein which is so melodious and sung so beautifully by Lata Mangeshkar and the spirited Daro to karo mat pyaar where Anuradha Paudwal joins Kishore Kumar in making a very happening song. Very nice movie overall
