I recently sat down to watch the legendary movie C.I.D. on my big screen. This film came out in 1956 and stars the evergreen Dev Anand. Even after all these years, I felt the magic was still there. It is a classic suspense drama that defines the golden era of Bollywood. If you love old-school thrillers, this one is a treat for your eyes.
The Gripping Story
The plot is very simple but effective. Dev Anand plays Inspector Shekhar. He is a smart cop who wants to solve the murder of a journalist. The journalist was about to expose a big criminal. I liked how the movie follows Shekhar as he tracks down the killers.
Along the way, he meets some interesting characters. Waheeda Rehman made her debut in this film. She looks stunning and plays a mysterious role. The chemistry between the actors is very natural. I think the pacing is quite fast for a movie made in the fifties. It does not feel slow at all.
Raj Khosla vs. His Other Hits
The director of this movie is Raj Khosla. He was known as a master of the “Noir” style in India. I have seen his other famous movies like Mera Saaya and Woh Kaun Thi?. Those films are very atmospheric and spooky.
Compared to those, C.I.D. feels more like a fast-paced crime thriller. It has more action and street-style energy. You can see his growth as a filmmaker here. He uses shadows and light to create a moody feeling. For more detailed reviews of Raj Khosla’s work, you can visit our archives at hdfolders.com.
Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing
I watched the 4K restored version of this film. I must say, I was impressed. The 4K resolution makes the black-and-white frames look very sharp. The gray tones are balanced well. I could see the fine details on Dev Anand’s hats and suits. The grain is still there, which gives it a real film look.
Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing and sound. Back then, movies were not recorded live on set. Actors had to dub their lines in a studio later. In this 4K version, the audio has been cleaned up. The songs by O.P. Nayyar sound crisp.
However, I noticed some issues with the lip-sync. In a few scenes, the words don’t quite match the lip movements. It is a common problem in old films. But here, it felt a bit loud at times. The background music sometimes covers the dialogues. I wish the balance was slightly better. But for a movie that is decades old, the quality is still great.
Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?
You might wonder if you should watch this in 4K or just catch it on TV. In my opinion, this is definitely worth a 4K watch. The cinematography by V. Ratra is iconic. Seeing the old streets of Bombay in high resolution is a joy.
This is not a one-time view. It is a movie you would want to keep in your digital library. The songs alone make it worth repeating. I found myself humming “Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan” long after the movie ended. You can read more about the movie’s history on the C.I.D. Wikipedia page.
Conclusion
I really had a great time watching C.I.D. again. Dev Anand is at his peak here. The mystery is solid and the music is legendary. Despite the small lip-sync issues in the dubbing, the 4K restoration is a win. It brings a classic story back to life for the new generation. I highly recommend it to everyone who loves good cinema.
