I recently sat down to watch the 1978 classic Apna Khoon. It is an old-school Bollywood masala film. This movie features the legendary Rishi Kapoor and the “Dream Girl” Hema Malini. The story follows a classic trope. It shows a policeman’s son who somehow ends up on the wrong side of the law. I wanted to see if this old gem still holds up today.

I watched the 4K restored version of this film. I must say, the picture quality is a mixed bag. The restoration makes the colors look very bright. The reds and greens of the old costumes look fresh. However, some scenes look a bit too sharp. This happens because of the AI upscaling. It loses that soft film look I usually like.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing and audio. Since this is an old film, the audio often gets distorted in digital prints. In this version, the Hindi dubbing felt a bit off. At times, the lip-sync did not match the actors’ movements. I noticed this especially during the high-pitched action scenes. The background score often felt louder than the dialogues. I had to keep adjusting my volume. For a 4K version, I expected the sound to be much cleaner. The voices felt a bit flat and lacked the depth of modern cinema.

B. Subhash vs. His Other Works

The director, B. Subhash, is famous for movies like Disco Dancer. When I compare Apna Khoon to Disco Dancer, it feels very different. Disco Dancer was all about style and music. Apna Khoon is more about family values and action. I think B. Subhash was still finding his style here. This movie is not as stylish as his later hits. However, it shows his talent for making commercial hits. I liked the pacing of this film more than some of his other slow dramas. It doesn’t get boring easily.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it worth a 4K watch?

Is Apna Khoon worth a 4K watch? In my opinion, no. While the 4K restoration brings out the colors, the audio issues are hard to ignore. The bad lip-sync in some parts ruined my mood. I think this is a “one-time watch” on a regular screen. You don’t need a high-end home theater for this one. It is a great movie for nostalgia. You can watch it with your parents on a Sunday afternoon. But don’t expect a high-quality technical experience like modern films.

Conclusion

I enjoyed the nostalgia trip that Apna Khoon provided. Rishi Kapoor’s energy is amazing. Hema Malini looks beautiful in every frame. The story is predictable but fun. However, the technical flaws in the dubbing and the 4K grain were disappointing. It is a decent movie from the golden era of Bollywood. If you are a fan of 70s action, give it a try once.
