I recently sat down to rewatch the 1994 mystery thriller Teesra Kaun. This movie features Mithun Chakraborty and Chunky Pandey in lead roles. It is a remake of a famous Malayalam film. I remember watching this on a grainy VHS tape years ago. Now, seeing it in a better format brought back many memories. The story happens mostly on a train journey. It follows three friends who get caught up in a murder mystery. If you love 90s Bollywood suspense, this one is a treat.
The Plot and My Experience
The story starts with three friends traveling by train. Chunky Pandey plays one of these friends. They are fun-loving guys having a great time. Suddenly, they find a dead body in their neighboring coupe. This changes their fun trip into a nightmare.
I really liked how the director builds the tension. Mithun Chakraborty enters the scene later as a mysterious man. His screen presence is still amazing to watch. He brings a certain weight to the film that others cannot. The movie keeps you guessing about the identity of the killer. Is it one of the friends? Or is it the “third person” (Teesra Kaun)? I found the pacing to be quite fast for a 90s film.
Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing
Let’s talk about the technical side of this movie. I watched the remastered version recently. The 4K resolution makes a huge difference. The colors look much better now. The dark scenes in the train are clear. You can see the details on the actors’ faces. However, I have some complaints about the audio.
I noticed that the Hindi dubbing quality is a bit hit-or-miss. Since this was filmed in the 90s, the post-sync work feels dated. In several scenes, the dialogue does not match the lip-sync perfectly. I found it a bit distracting during the emotional scenes. The voices sometimes sound like they were recorded in a small room. It does not always match the open environment of the train. If you are a fan of high-quality audio, this might bother you. But for a nostalgic trip, it is manageable.
Partho Ghosh and His Style
The director, Partho Ghosh, was a master of suspense in that era. I often compare this film to his other big hit, 100 Days. While 100 Days was a dark and scary thriller, Teesra Kaun feels more like an adventure.
In 100 Days, the focus was on a supernatural element. Here, the focus is on a grounded crime. Partho Ghosh knows how to use tight spaces. He used a house in 100 Days and a train here. I think his work in Teesra Kaun is more light-hearted because of Chunky Pandey’s comedy. If you want to see more reviews of such classics, you can check out other articles on hdfolders.com.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Worthy or Not?
Is this movie worth a 4K watch? I would say yes, but only if you are a hardcore Mithun Da fan. The 4K scan makes the movie look very clean. It feels like a new film in terms of visuals. But the audio issues hold it back.
If you are a casual viewer, a one-time watch on a standard platform is enough. The mystery is good, but it doesn’t have a huge “rewatch value” once you know the killer. I enjoyed the nostalgia more than the actual plot this time.
Conclusion
Teesra Kaun remains a solid entertainer from the 90s. Mithun and Chunky make a great pair. The suspense is handled well by Partho Ghosh. The Hindi dubbing and lip-sync issues are the only major letdowns. It is a fun ride if you don’t take it too seriously.
