Bedardi Movie Review: Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar’s Hindi Action Classic

I recently sat down to rewatch the 1993 hit Bedardi. This movie stars Ajay Devgn and Urmila Matondkar in lead roles. It comes from a time when Ajay was the king of action. I remember watching this on old TV channels. But seeing it now feels very different. The story is about a man named Vijay. He sells his kidney to pay for his sister’s wedding. It is a very emotional and dark plot for that era.

The Story and Performances

In my opinion, Ajay Devgn was the best part of this film. He has that raw intensity in his eyes. I liked how he handled the emotional scenes. Urmila Matondkar looked beautiful, but she did not have a very big role. Naseeruddin Shah played the villain, and he was quite scary. I felt the pain of the main character throughout the movie. The action scenes are typical 90s style. There are lots of flying kicks and loud punches. If you love old-school Bollywood, you will enjoy this.

Comparing Bedardi to Other Films by Krishnakant Pandya

The director of this film is Krishnakant Pandya. I have seen his other works like Jung (1996). Both movies have a very gritty feel. However, I think Bedardi has a much better emotional core. In Jung, the action felt a bit forced to me. In this movie, the action happens because the hero is desperate. Pandya knows how to show a hero who is struggling against the system. Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the new 4K version of this movie. I must say, the 4K resolution makes a big difference. The colors look much better now. The skin tones of the actors look real. The dark scenes are clear and not grainy. However, I noticed some issues with the sound.

Since this is an old movie, the Hindi dubbing quality is a bit hit or miss. Back then, they used to record voices in a studio later. I noticed that in many scenes, the lip-sync does not match perfectly. Sometimes the dialogue starts a second late. I found it a bit distracting during the emotional peaks. The background music is also very loud. It sometimes drowns out the voices. I wish the audio team had cleaned it up more for the 4K release. The Hindi dubbing feels a bit dated compared to modern standards.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? Well, it depends. If you are a huge fan of Ajay Devgn, then yes. Seeing him in high definition is a treat. The action looks great in 4K. But if you just want to see the story, a one-time view is enough. The story is a bit slow in the second half. The songs are okay but not great. I would suggest watching it once for the nostalgia. It is a good film, but not a masterpiece that you need to see every month.

Conclusion

I think Bedardi is a solid action drama. It shows why Ajay Devgn became such a big star. The 4K print is a great effort to save old cinema. Even with the dubbing issues, I enjoyed the experience. It reminded me of the simple days of Bollywood. The villains were bad, and the hero was brave.

My Rating: 3.5/5
