Action Replayy Movie Review: Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai’s Retro Comedy Fun

I recently sat down to rewatch Action Replayy, a movie starring Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai. This film takes us back to the 1970s through a time-travel plot. It is a light-hearted comedy that tries to show how love used to be in the old days. If you like retro fashion and loud colors, this movie might catch your eye.

The Story and Performances

The story follows Bunty, who is tired of his parents’ constant fighting. He uses a time machine to go back to the 70s. His goal is to make his father, Kishen, a cool guy so he can win over Mala. I think Akshay Kumar did a good job as the shy Kishen. He wore big glasses and funny hair, which made me laugh.

Aishwarya Rai looked very beautiful in the retro sarees and polka dots. She played the bold Mala with a lot of energy. However, the chemistry between them felt a bit forced at times. If you enjoy seeing Bollywood stars in funny costumes, you will like their looks. You can read more about the Action Replayy cast on Wikipedia.

Comparing Vipul Shah’s Direction

The director, Vipul Amrutlal Shah, has given us great hits like Namastey London and Waqt. I feel those movies had much more emotion and a stronger story. In Namastey London, the romance felt very real and deep.

In Action Replayy, the focus is more on the 70s theme than the actual plot. It feels a bit loud compared to his other work. While it is a fun one-time watch, it does not have the same magic as his older films. I missed the strong emotional touch that Vipul Shah usually brings to his movies.

Technical Quality and Hindi Dubbing

I watched this movie in a high-resolution format to check the visuals. The 4K version makes the colors pop. The bright yellows and pinks of the 70s sets look very clear. The color grading is sharp, which makes the retro world feel alive.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing and audio quality. Since this is an original Hindi film, I looked closely at the ADR (dialogue replacement). In some scenes, the Hindi dubbing does not match the lip-sync perfectly. I noticed a few moments where the words felt a bit separate from the actors’ mouth movements.

The background score is loud, which sometimes hides the dialogue. If you are watching on a good sound system, you might find the mix a bit uneven. It is not the best audio work I have seen in an Akshay Kumar movie.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? I would say no. While the colors are bright, the movie itself is not a visual masterpiece. It is a fun film to watch with your family on a Sunday afternoon.

I suggest a one-time view on a normal screen. You do not need a high-end setup to enjoy the jokes or the songs. The movie is more about nostalgia than high-quality filmmaking. If you are a big fan of Akshay’s comedy, you might enjoy it more than others.

Conclusion

Action Replayy is a decent attempt at a retro comedy. It has funny moments and great costumes. But it lacks a strong heart and perfect technical finish. The audio sync issues were a bit distracting for me. If you have some free time, give it a look for the songs like “Zor Ka Jhatka.”

My Rating: 2.5/5
