Anaam Movie Review: Armaan Kohli and Ayesha Jhulka’s Superhit Hindi Movie

I recently sat down to watch the movie Anaam again. It stars Armaan Kohli and Ayesha Jhulka in the lead roles. This film was released in 1992. It is a classic action-thriller from that era. I remember seeing it on a small TV years ago. Seeing it now brought back many memories. You can read more about the movie’s history on Wikipedia.

The Plot and My Experience

The story is about a man who loses his memory. Armaan Kohli plays this character. He does not know his name or his past. He is being chased by people who want to kill him. Ayesha Jhulka plays the girl who helps him. I think their chemistry is very sweet. Armaan was quite a big star back then. He had a strong screen presence.

I liked how the story moves. It is not just a simple romance. There is a lot of mystery involved. Every time the hero gets a clue about his life, something goes wrong. It kept me hooked until the end. If you like 90s suspense movies, you will enjoy this one. I have reviewed similar old classics on hdfolders.com as well.

Director Comparison: Anees Bazmee’s Debut

Did you know this was Anees Bazmee’s first film? Today, we know him for big comedies like No Entry or Welcome. But back in 1992, he started with this serious thriller. I feel he did a great job for his first time.

If I compare Anaam to his later films like Hulchul, this one feels more raw. It does not have the loud comedy he is famous for now. I actually like this version of Anees Bazmee. He focused a lot on the pace of the movie. The scenes are edited well. It does not feel slow or boring at any point.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the new 4K version of this movie. I must say, the 4K resolution is quite a surprise. The pictures are very sharp. The colors look much better than the old DVD versions. The reds and blues in the outfits look very bright and clear. The skin tones look real, which is rare for old film masters.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing. In the 90s, actors used to record their voices in a studio after filming. I noticed that the Hindi dubbing quality is a bit hit or miss here. In the emotional scenes, the voice matches the face perfectly. I could feel the pain in the hero’s voice.

However, in the action scenes, the lip-sync is a bit off. When Armaan Kohli shouts or runs, the sound comes a second late. It is not a deal-breaker, but you will notice it. The background music is also very loud. Sometimes it hides the dialogues. But overall, the 4K print makes it look like a modern movie.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K or One-Time View?

Is Anaam worth a 4K watch? I would say yes. If you are a fan of 90s Bollywood, you should see this in high quality. The restoration work is good. It makes the movie look fresh.

However, if you are not into old-school thrillers, it might be a one-time view for you. The story is good, but the style is very much from that time. I suggest watching it on a big screen to enjoy the 4K details. It is a fun trip down memory lane.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed revisiting Anaam. It is a solid thriller with great music. Armaan Kohli and Ayesha Jhulka did a fine job. Even with the slight dubbing issues, the movie holds up well. It is a great example of early 90s cinema.

My Rating: 3.5/5
