I recently sat down to re-watch the classic Bollywood movie Anuraag. This film came out in 1972 and was directed by the legendary Shakti Samanta. It stars Vinod Mehra and Moushumi Chatterjee in the lead roles. The story is very emotional and simple. It asks a big question: can a man truly love and marry a blind woman? I felt that even after many years, the emotions in this film stay fresh.

The Heart of the Story

I think the best part of this movie is Moushumi Chatterjee. This was her first Hindi film. She played the role of a blind girl so beautifully. I did not feel like she was acting. Her expressions were very real. Vinod Mehra also did a great job. He looked very handsome and played a kind-hearted man perfectly.

The story is about their love. But it is also about a small boy who is dying of cancer. I cried during many scenes because the bond between the characters is very deep. It is a family drama that does not feel loud or fake.

Shakti Samanta’s Magic

I have seen many films by Shakti Samanta. I remember watching Aradhana and Amar Prem. Those movies were huge hits. If I compare Anuraag to them, I feel this movie is much more quiet.

Aradhana had a lot of style and great songs. But Anuraag has a lot of soul. I think Shakti Samanta knew how to pull the heartstrings of the Indian audience. He did not need big action scenes. He just needed good actors and a solid script. This film is much more realistic than his other big musicals.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the 4K restored version of this film. I was surprised by how good it looked. The 4K resolution makes the old frames look very clean. The colors are not too bright, which is good. They look very natural and soft. I could see the details on the actors’ faces clearly.

However, I have some thoughts on the audio and dubbing quality. Since this is an old movie, the audio was re-processed for the 4K version. In some scenes, I felt the Hindi dubbing did not match the lip-sync perfectly. This usually happens when old films are cleaned up.

I noticed that the background music was sometimes louder than the dialogues. The Hindi voices feel a bit “flat” because they were recorded in old studios. While the video quality is a 10/10, the audio sync feels a bit old-fashioned. It does not ruin the experience, but you will notice it if you look closely.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Now, you might ask if you should watch this in 4K or just on a normal TV. I believe if you love classic cinema, the 4K version is worth it. It feels like watching a brand-new movie from the 70s.

But, if you are not a fan of slow dramas, this might be a one-time view for you. The movie is slow. It takes time to build the story. I enjoyed it because I like old songs and simple stories. If you want to see a great performance by Moushumi, then go for it. For others, a regular HD print is enough.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed my time with Anuraag. It reminded me of a time when movies were made with simple hearts. The music by S.D. Burman is still very soothing. Even with the slight dubbing and sync issues in the 4K version, the film shines. It is a beautiful story about kindness and love.
