I recently watched the classic 1981 film Chakra, and it left me thinking for hours. This movie features the legendary Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah at their absolute best. The colors look natural and not too bright. It keeps the original “film look” which I really liked. However, I have some thoughts on the Hindi dubbing and sound.

In many parts, the Hindi dubbing does not match the lip-sync perfectly. I noticed that the voices sometimes felt like they were recorded in a closed room. They didn’t always match the outdoor setting. In some emotional scenes, the sync was a bit off. This was common in 80s films, but in 4K, these flaws are easier to see. The background noise is also a bit loud at times. It can make the dialogues hard to hear. If you are used to modern crisp sound, this might bother you.

How it Compares to Other Films

The director, Rabindra Dharmaraj, sadly passed away very young. This was his only major film. I often compare his style to directors like Shyam Benegal or Govind Nihalani. While Benegal’s films like Ankur feel more poetic, Dharmaraj’s style in Chakra is much more “in your face.”
