Chal Aati Hai Kya Khandala Review: Ashok Saraf’s Classic Comedy Telefilm

I recently revisited a gem from the past called Chal Aati Hai Kya Khandala. This movie is a Hindi-dubbed version of an old Marathi comedy starring the legendary Ashok Saraf. If you grew up in the 90s, you probably remember these telefilms. They used to air on channels like Zee or Doordarshan. I wanted to see if the magic still works today.

The Comedy Timing of Ashok Saraf

Ashok Saraf is a master of expressions. In this movie, his timing is perfect. I found myself laughing at his small gestures. He plays a common man caught in weird situations. The plot is simple but very funny. I think modern comedies often miss this kind of innocent humor.

The supporting cast also does a great job. However, Ashok Saraf carries the whole film on his shoulders. If you like his work, you should also check out our review of other classic comedies on our site. You can also read more about Ashok Saraf’s amazing career on Wikipedia.

Comparing it to the Director’s Other Work

The director, Ravi Namade, is known for making low-budget but high-impact movies. If I compare Chal Aati Hai Kya Khandala to his other films like Sarkarnama, the vibe is very different. Sarkarnama was serious and political. This movie is purely for laughs.

I feel this film is more like his early experimental work. It does not have a big budget. It relies on the script and actors. Compared to other Marathi-to-Hindi dubbed films of that era, this one feels more grounded. It doesn’t try too hard to be a Bollywood “masala” movie. It stays true to its roots.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side. I watched the 4K restored version available online. I must say, the color grading is a bit hit or miss. The skin tones look a bit too orange in some scenes. The 4K resolution makes the old film grain very obvious. I liked seeing the details, but it doesn’t look like a modern movie.

The biggest issue I found was the Hindi dubbing quality. To be honest, it is quite poor. The voices do not match the actors at all. In many scenes, the lip-sync is completely off. Ashok Saraf has a very iconic voice in Marathi. The Hindi voice actor tries to mimic him but fails.

I noticed that the background music often drowns out the dialogue. This is a common problem in old dubbed telefilms. If you are used to high-quality dubbing like in Pushpa or KGF, this will disappoint you. It feels like it was recorded in a small room with cheap mics.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K or One-Time Watch?

Should you watch this in 4K? I don’t think so. The 4K version doesn’t add much value because the original source material was likely 16mm or low-quality tape. The sharpness feels artificial.

I would suggest watching it as a one-time view for nostalgia. If you are a die-hard fan of Ashok Saraf, you will enjoy it. But for a casual viewer, the bad dubbing might be annoying. It is a great movie to play in the background while you do some chores. It brings back memories of a simpler time.

Conclusion

Overall, Chal Aati Hai Kya Khandala is a funny ride despite its technical flaws. The story is clean and family-friendly. I really enjoyed the nostalgia, but the dubbing kept pulling me out of the experience. It is a proof that good acting can save a weak technical production.
