I recently revisited the classic movie Geetanjali, and it felt like a trip down memory lane. Directed by the legendary Mani Ratnam, this film is a pure piece of art. Her eyes, her expressions, and her smile remind me so much of a young Rekha. But beyond the looks, the movie is a deep emotional ride that ends on a very painful note.

The story of Geetanjali is not your typical boy-meets-girl romance. Both the main characters are facing death. Prakash, played by Nagarjuna, has terminal cancer. He goes to Ooty to spend his last days in peace. There he meets Geetanjali, a girl full of life. Later, he finds out she also has a serious heart condition.

I watched the 4K restored version of this movie. I must say, the technical quality is impressive for a 1989 film. The 4K resolution brings out the beauty of Ooty. The greens look fresh and the misty mountains look very real. The color grading is done well. It does not look fake or too bright. It keeps the old-world charm while making the image crisp.

However, I need to talk about the Hindi dubbing. This is where I felt a bit let down. The Hindi dubbing does not always match the lip-sync. I noticed many scenes where the actors finish speaking, but the Hindi audio continues for a second. Also, the choice of voice actors for the Hindi version feels a bit off. The depth of Nagarjuna’s original performance feels lost in the Hindi voice-over. The songs, composed by Ilaiyaraaja, are legendary. But in Hindi, the lyrics don’t fit the rhythm perfectly. If you can, I suggest watching it with subtitles.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is it worth a 4K watch? I would say a big yes. If you love cinematography, you must see this in high definition. The visuals are a treat. It is not just a one-time view for me. I can watch it again just for the music and the scenery. However, if you are strictly looking for a happy ending, you might find it too sad.

The chemistry between Nagarjuna and the “Rekha-lookalike” Girija is magical. It is a movie that makes you think about life. It tells us to enjoy every moment we have.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed watching this classic again. Despite the weak Hindi dubbing, the story and the visuals win. It is a must-watch for any Mani Ratnam fan. The ending will stay with you for a long time.
