I recently sat down to watch the classic 1983 film Gehri Chot, also known as Durdesh. This movie features Shashi Kapoor and Parveen Babi in lead roles. It is an Indo-Canadian co-production, which was a big deal back then. I remember seeing posters of this film long ago. Watching it now in high quality felt like a trip down memory lane. The movie is an action-thriller set mostly in Canada.

The Story and the Cast

The plot follows a man looking for his brother in a foreign land. I liked how Shashi Kapoor carried himself with so much grace. He always looks like a superstar on screen. Parveen Babi looked beautiful, and her style was very modern for that time. The film also stars Raj Babbar and Sharmila Tagore.

I found the chemistry between the actors quite good. However, the pacing felt a bit slow in the middle. If you compare this to other films by director Ambrish Sangal, you can see his style. He also directed Aap To Aise Na The, which was a huge hit. While that film was a romantic drama, Gehri Chot tries to be a hard-hitting action movie. I feel Sangal is better at handling emotions than complex action scenes.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side. I watched the 4K version of this film. I must say, the color grading is quite decent. The outdoor scenes in Canada look very clean. The skin tones look natural, not too orange or fake. I liked how the 4K resolution brings out the details in Shashi Kapoor’s suits.

But I have a major complaint about the Hindi dubbing. Since this was a co-production, many actors were from different countries. The Hindi dubbing quality is quite poor in some parts. I noticed that the lip-sync does not match the dialogue at all. It feels like I am watching a dubbed South Indian movie from the 90s.

The voice levels are also uneven. Sometimes the background music is too loud, and the voices get buried. If you are a fan of technical perfection, this might annoy you. I expect better audio work for a 4K release. You can check out more technical reviews of old classics on our site hdfolders.com.

How it Compares to Sangal’s Other Works

I have seen many movies by Ambrish Sangal. His film Wanted (1984) had much better action. Gehri Chot feels a bit confused between a family drama and a crime thriller. I think the director tried to do too much because of the international locations. I still prefer his simpler Indian stories. The songs by R.D. Burman are okay, but they are not his best work.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K or One-Time Watch?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? My answer is mixed. If you are a die-hard fan of Shashi Kapoor or Parveen Babi, you will love the visuals. The 4K scan makes them look great. However, for a regular movie lover, the weak dubbing and slow story might be a turn-off.

I think this is a one-time view for most people. The novelty of seeing Canada in an 80s Bollywood film is nice. But the technical flaws in the audio department hold it back. I would suggest watching it on a weekend when you want some nostalgia.

Conclusion

Overall, Gehri Chot is a decent attempt at an international thriller. It has great stars and some good moments. But the bad Hindi dubbing and average music make it less than a classic. I enjoyed the 4K visuals, but the sound let me down.

My Rating: 2.5/5
