I recently sat down to watch the colorized version of Half Ticket, and I must say, it was a wild ride. This film is often called Kishore Kumar’s best comedy work. After watching it again, I totally agree. It is a classic from 1962 that still makes me laugh out loud. Kishore Da plays a grown man who pretends to be a child to get a half-priced train ticket. The things he does in this movie are just pure madness.
The Genius of Kishore Kumar and Madhubala
In my opinion, nobody could have played this role like Kishore Kumar. He uses his voice and body in such funny ways. I loved seeing his chemistry with the beautiful Madhubala. Even though the plot is very silly, they make it work. I felt like a kid again while watching his antics. If you want to know more about the cast, you can check the Half Ticket Wikipedia page.
The songs are the soul of this movie. “Aake Seedhi Lagi Dil Pe” is my favorite. Kishore Kumar sings both the male and female parts. It is amazing to see his talent. I have reviewed other old classics on our site at hdfolders.com, but this one stands out for its energy.
Comparison to Director Kalidas’s Other Work
The movie was directed by Kalidas. He was known for making different kinds of films. For example, he directed Bheegi Raat, which was a serious romantic drama. Comparing that to Half Ticket is hard. This movie is loud and fast. Bheegi Raat was slow and emotional.
I think Kalidas gave Kishore Kumar a lot of freedom here. He let the actor do his own thing. This is why the movie feels so natural. Many directors try to control actors too much. But here, the director just let the magic happen.
Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing
Now, let’s talk about the technical side. I watched the version that has been restored to 4K and colorized.
Color Grading and Resolution
The 4K resolution is quite good. I could see the details on the actors’ faces clearly. The colors are bright, but sometimes they look a bit fake. In some scenes, the skin tones look a little too orange. However, it is much better than the old black-and-white grainy prints. I enjoyed seeing the old Bombay streets in color.
Hindi Dubbing and Audio Sync
This is where I had some issues. Since this is an old film, the “dubbing” or audio restoration is tricky. In the color version, the Hindi audio feels a bit detached from the video. I noticed that the lip-sync is slightly off in a few comedy scenes.
The background music sometimes drowns out the dialogues. I had to turn up the volume to hear what Kishore Da was saying. For a 4K release, I expected the sound to be cleaner. The Hindi dubbing quality in these restored versions often loses the original warmth. It feels a bit digital and sharp.
Viewer’s Verdict: Is 4K Worth It?
Is this movie worth a 4K watch? Well, it depends. If you are a huge fan of Kishore Kumar, then yes. Seeing him in high definition is a treat. The colors make the movie feel modern and fresh for today’s kids.
However, if you are a casual viewer, a regular HD version is enough. The 4K doesn’t add a lot of “real” detail because the original film was old. It is a great one-time watch with your family. I don’t think you need to keep a 4K copy in your collection forever.
Conclusion
I had a great time watching Half Ticket. It reminded me why Kishore Kumar is a legend. The comedy is clean and very funny. While the technical restoration has some flaws, the soul of the movie is still there. The Hindi audio could have been better synced, but it doesn’t ruin the fun.

The Untold Story of Kishore Kumar and Madhubala
1) Madhubala once told Isaac Mujawar about Kishore Kumar, "I can't do anything for him, yet he cares so much for me." She said this after seeing Kishore Kumar's unwavering love and dedication. 2) Gulzar recounts each and every incident in his book, "Actually I Met Them: The Memoir." He recounts how during the shooting of the 1968 film "Do Dooni Chaar," Kishore Kumar would become anxious to meet Madhubala after 5:45 p.m. He said, "I promised Madhu that I would be with her at that time," and he would leave the shooting midway at 6 p.m. The world may consider Kishore Kumar a crazy and carefree person, but for Madhubala, he was the best husband in the world. 3) Iftikhar mentions that a magazine once published a false story about Kishore Kumar's drinking. When he jokingly asked about this in front of Madhubala, Madhubala, after returning home, became angry and told him that he secretly drinks and tore his shirt in anger. A wife does this only when she loves her husband.
4) Chunnilal Kabish, a writer and Madhubala's family astrologer, writes that Madhubala felt peace of mind after meeting Kishore during her illness. Whenever he visited, his voice would sing like a cuckoo, and she would say that his arrival brought light to the house. Madhubala always said that she never got any happiness from him.
5) Actor Pran wrote in his article, "Mera Yaar Kishore Kumar," that Kishore's love for Madhubala was an example that is only seen in stories.
6) Dilip Kumar himself admitted that Kishore's care for Madhubala had a negative impact on her acting and singing career.
7) According to Leena Chandravkar, Madhubala wanted a child with Kishore Kumar and often said, "You have become so important that you cannot give me one." Madhubala yearned for the joy of motherhood, but due to her illness, this was impossible.
8) When Kishore Kumar was shooting in Bombay, he often ate dinner twice in the evening: once with Madhubala and later with his mother.
9) When Madhubala was in a relationship with Dilip Kumar, he would often joke with Kishore Kumar's wife, Ruma, whenever he met her, "You should never leave her, or I will take your place."
10) Kishore Kumar, Madhubala, and Mehmood were childhood friends who used to play together at Bombay Talkies, and Madhubala would playfully pretend to be Kishore Kumar's wife.
11) Kishore Kumar learned of the severity of Madhubala's illness during the filming of "Mahalon Ke Khwaab." The real pain behind Madhubala's cheerful smile shook him to the core.
12) Madhubala made everyone on the set laugh, but Kishore Kumar was the first person who could make her laugh.
13) Madhubala asked Kishore Kumar to marry her because she was deeply impressed by his humor and singing.
14) Kishore Kumar himself stated that Madhubala needed care, and it was better for her to live with her loved ones. Therefore, he kept Madhubala at her father's house. He was also afraid that Madhubala might become fed up with her life and commit suicide, as Kishore had once saved her from such an attempt in London.
The conclusion is that Madhubala's biggest enemy in life was her illness. Kishore Kumar tried everything possible, but fate had other plans. Not every woman is so fortunate to have a husband like Kishore Kumar. In fact, Kishore Kumar sacrificed his entire youth for Madhubala. Regarding other marriages, Madhubala's sister Chanchal herself remarried, so would you call her wrong?
Madhubala was happy with Kishore Kumar. She always said, "I want to live, I don't want to die. When will the doctors find a cure for my illness?" Dilip Kumar was already married, so you can understand for yourself why she wanted to live. If Madhubala's illness had been treated, you would remember Kishore Kumar and Madhubala as a happy couple today.
The marriage of Kishore Kumar and Madhubala is a story of sacrifice and dedication that is beyond the understanding of ordinary people.
This story belongs to an introvert great singer who never expressed his emotions publicly.
