I recently watched I Am Kalam again to get ready for Children’s Day. This movie is a real gem in Indian cinema. It tells the story of a young boy named Chhotu. He works at a roadside dhaba. After hearing a speech by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, he changes his name to Kalam. He wants to study and become a big man. My heart felt so many emotions while watching his struggle and his smile. It is easily one of the best Hindi motivational movies you can watch with your family.

A Story That Touches Your Soul

The plot is very simple but powerful. I loved how the movie shows the friendship between Kalam and a prince. They come from different worlds. One has everything, and the other has nothing. Yet, they find a common bond. I think the director, Nila Madhab Panda, did a great job here. He did not make the movie look too sad. Instead, he made it look hopeful. I felt happy seeing Kalam’s hunger for books. It reminds me that we should never stop learning.

Comparing Nila Madhab Panda’s Work

I have seen other movies by Nila Madhab Panda. For example, he made Kadvi Hawa and Halkaa. Those movies also talk about social issues. But I feel I Am Kalam is his most innocent work. Kadvi Hawa is very dark and serious. It talks about climate change. On the other hand, Halkaa is about a child’s dream too. But I Am Kalam has a special magic. It feels more real and raw. Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side. I watched this in a high-definition format. If you find a 4K version, the desert scenes look beautiful. The sand and the old fort look very clear. The color grading is warm. It gives a dusty and rustic feel to the screen. I liked how the sunlight looks in the outdoor shots.

I also paid close attention to the Hindi dubbing and audio. Since the movie uses many local actors, some parts use ADR (dubbing in the studio). I noticed that the Hindi dubbing quality is mostly good. However, in some scenes, the lip-sync is a bit off. I saw that the words don’t always match the mouth movements. This usually happens in low-budget indie films. But it does not ruin the experience. The voice of the main boy is very sweet. It fits his face perfectly. The background music is also simple and does not loud.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

You might wonder if you should hunt for a 4K copy. In my opinion, this movie is more about the story than the visuals. The 4K resolution makes the Rajasthani clothes look great. You can see the small details on the turbans. But even in 1080p, the movie works well.

I would say this is more than just a one-time view. I have watched it three times now. Every time, I find something new to love. If you have kids at home, you must show them this. It will teach them the value of hard work.

I Am Kalam is a beautiful movie. It is honest and sweet. The acting by Harsh Mayar is top-notch. He won a National Award for this, and I totally see why. The Hindi dubbing has small issues, but the emotions are loud and clear. It is the best gift for your kids this Children’s Day.
