I recently watched the movie Justice Chowdhary (2000) starring Mithun Chakraborty. I grew up watching Mithun Da’s action films. This movie is a classic example of the mass cinema we loved back then. It is an action drama that focuses on a tough judge. He wants to clean up the system. If you like 90s-style masala movies, this one is for you.
The Story and Performance
In this film, Mithun plays a dual role. He plays both the father and the son. I think Mithun Da did a great job as the old judge. He has a lot of “swag” in his walk and talk. The story is quite simple. It is about a father who stays honest even when his own family is in trouble.
The action scenes are very typical of that era. There are loud punches and dramatic jumps. I felt that the emotional scenes were a bit loud. But that was the style back then. You can read more about the cast and crew on Wikipedia. It helps to understand the history of this remake.
Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing
I watched this movie in a 4K upscaled version. I have mixed feelings about the technical side. The 4K resolution makes the picture look sharp. You can see the details on the faces clearly. However, the color grading feels a bit too bright. Some scenes look too yellow or orange. It does not feel like a modern 4K film. It feels like an old print that was cleaned up too much.
Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing. This is where the movie struggles. This film was originally made in a different language and then dubbed. I noticed that the Hindi dubbing does not match the lip-sync at all. Mithun is speaking, but the words come a second later.
The voice actors used for the side characters sound very funny. They don’t match the expressions of the actors. I found it a bit distracting. If you are someone who likes perfect audio, this might annoy you. I have seen better dubbing in other movies on hdfolders.com. Usually, big Mithun films have better sound quality than this one.
Comparison to Other Films by the Director
This movie reminds me of other films by T.L.V. Prasad. He worked with Mithun on many projects like Jallaad and Sher-E-Hindustan. If I compare Justice Chowdhary to Jallaad, I think Jallaad was much better. The story in Jallaad was deeper.
In Justice Chowdhary, the direction feels a bit rushed. The director focused more on the fights than the story. It feels like a standard “B-grade” action movie from the late 90s. I have reviewed similar films on our site, like Mithun’s other action hits. You can see the pattern in these movies. They use the same sets and the same camera angles.
Viewer’s Verdict: 4K or One-Time View?
Is this movie worth watching in 4K? To be honest, I don’t think so. The 4K doesn’t add much value because the original film quality was low. The grainy look is still there. The bad dubbing makes it hard to stay focused.
I would say this is a one-time view. It is good for a Sunday afternoon if you want to feel nostalgic. You can enjoy the loud dialogues and Mithun’s unique style. But do not expect a masterpiece. It is just a loud, fun action flick from a different time.
Conclusion
I enjoyed the nostalgia of Justice Chowdhary. But the technical flaws are hard to ignore. The bad lip-sync and bright colors make it look cheap. If you are a die-hard Mithun fan, go for it. If not, you can skip the 4K version. Just watch it on a normal screen for the old-school feels.
