If you love 80s Bollywood, you must have seen Karma (1986) at least once. I recently watched it again to see if it still holds up. Directed by the legendary Subhash Ghai, this movie is a massive multi-starrer. It features Dilip Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, and Naseeruddin Shah. The film is about a jailer who recruits three prisoners to take down a terrorist. It is a classic tale of revenge and patriotism.

The Grand Vision of Subhash Ghai

Subhash Ghai is often called the “Showman” of India. I think Karma shows exactly why he earned that title. Compared to his other films like Ram Lakhan or Saudagar, this one feels much bigger. I noticed that Ghai loves making movies that feel like a celebration. While Khalnayak was more about a single character, Karma is a team effort. Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the new 4K restored version of the film. I must say, the picture quality is a huge jump. The colors look very natural now. The outdoor shots of the mountains look beautiful and clear. The red tones in the explosions don’t bleed like they did on old DVDs.

However, I have some thoughts on the Hindi dubbing and audio sync. Since this movie was made in 1986, the actors recorded their lines later in a studio. In the 4K version, the high-quality video makes the audio flaws more obvious. I noticed that in many scenes, the lip-sync does not match perfectly.

When Dilip Kumar speaks his heavy dialogues, the sound feels a bit detached from his face. The Hindi dubbing quality feels a bit “hollow” in the action scenes. Some sound effects like gunshots sound very dated. If you are used to modern Dolby Atmos, this might bother you. But for an 80s fan, it adds a bit of nostalgia.

The Iconic Villain: Dr. Dang

I cannot talk about this movie without mentioning Anupam Kher. His role as Dr. Dang is one of the best villain roles ever. His “slap” scene with Dilip Kumar is still very famous. I feel Anupam Kher stole the show from the heroes. His voice is cold and scary. Even with the old dubbing style, his performance feels very real. The way he says “Rana Vishwa Pratap Singh” gives me chills every time.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is Karma worth a 4K watch today? I would say yes, but mostly for the fans. If you want to see the grand locations and the great Dilip Kumar in high detail, go for it. The 4K resolution makes the forest scenes look great.

However, if you are a casual viewer who hates old audio quality, it might be a one-time view for you. The story is a bit long. Some scenes feel slow by today’s standards.
