I finally sat down to watch Kashmakash, the Hindi version of the Bengali film Noukadubi. This movie is a beautiful period drama directed by the late Rituparno Ghosh. It is based on a famous story by Rabindranath Tagore. If you enjoy classic Indian stories, you will find this film very touching. It tells a story of love, fate, and a big misunderstanding after a boat accident.

The Story and Performances

The plot is quite emotional. Two couples get separated during a storm on a river. Due to the darkness and confusion, the wrong brides and grooms end up together. I found the story very engaging from the start.

Jisshu Sengupta is a brilliant actor. He plays the role of Ramesh with a lot of depth. You can feel his guilt and confusion in every scene. However, the real stars for me were the Sen sisters. Raima Sen is graceful and expresses so much through her eyes. Riya Sen was a big surprise. I usually see her in glam roles, but here she looks very innocent. Her performance as the simple village girl is very real.

Comparison with Rituparno Ghosh’s Other Works

I have seen many films by Rituparno Ghosh, like Chokher Bali. He was a master at showing human emotions. When I compare Kashmakash to his other movies, this one feels more like a fable.

It focuses on the beauty of old Bengal. The way he handles female characters is always special. This movie is no different.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the 4K version, and I must say, the visuals are great. The 4K resolution makes the old-style houses and sarees look very sharp. The color grading is warm and gives a nostalgic feeling. I loved the shots of the river and the rain. Everything looks very clean and high-quality.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing. This is where I felt a bit disappointed. Since the movie was originally shot in Bengali, the Hindi voices don’t always match the lip movements. I felt that some of the original emotions were lost in the dubbing. The voices used for the characters sounded a bit flat at times. If you are used to watching movies with subtitles, the dubbing might bother you. But if you prefer Hindi, it is still watchable. It just doesn’t feel as natural as the original Bengali version.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Is this movie worth your time in 4K? I would say yes, but mostly for the art. If you love cinematography and beautiful sets, the 4K version is worth it. It feels like looking at a moving painting. The details in the costumes are much clearer in this resolution.

However, if you are only watching for the story, a regular HD version is enough. The story is the main hero here. It is a one-time watch for most people. But for fans of Tagore or Rituparno Ghosh, it is a movie you might want to keep in your collection.

Conclusion

I really liked the emotional journey of Kashmakash. The acting is top-notch, especially by the lead trio. While the Hindi dubbing is a bit weak, the visual beauty of the 4K print makes up for it. It is a slow movie, so don’t expect any big action scenes. It is a film for a quiet evening.
