I recently sat down to watch Kisna: The Warrior Poet again. This movie came out a long time ago. It stars Vivek Oberoi and Antonia Bernath. The story takes us back to 1947. This was the time when India was fighting for its freedom. Even after all these years, the theme of “true love” in this film feels very pure.

The Story of Kisna and Catherine

I really liked how the director showed the bond between Kisna and Catherine. Kisna is a local boy from the hills. Catherine is the daughter of a British officer. When the riots start, Kisna takes it upon himself to protect her. He wants to take her safely to the British High Commission.

Subhash Ghai is often called the “Showman” of Bollywood. I have seen many of his films like Taal and Pardes. If you compare Kisna to those, it feels just as big. The sets are huge. The locations are beautiful. However, I felt the story was a bit slow in the middle.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched this movie in a 4K version recently. I must say, the picture quality is very clean. The colors look deep and natural. You can see the details in the old costumes. The lighting in the forest scenes looks very real.

But I have a big complaint about the Hindi dubbing. Since many actors are British, their voices are dubbed in Hindi. In many scenes, the lip-sync does not match at all. It feels very distracting. The voices chosen for the British characters sound a bit funny. They don’t match the serious tone of the movie. I wish they had used better voice artists for the Hindi version. It makes the film feel like an old dubbed cartoon sometimes.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? Well, I have mixed feelings. If you are a fan of A.R. Rahman’s music, watch it on a good screen. The songs look and sound great in high resolution. The cinematography is also top-notch.

However, if you are looking for a modern thriller, this might feel too slow. For me, it is a one-time view if you want to see Vivek Oberoi’s best work. The dubbing issues make it hard to stay focused for the full three hours.

Conclusion

Kisna is a beautiful movie to look at. It tells a heartfelt story of love and sacrifice. Subhash Ghai tried to make something very special here. While the visuals are great, the dubbing and the slow pace pull it down. It is a decent watch for people who love old-school Bollywood dramas.
