Lipstick Under My Burkha Full Movie (4K) Review & Story

Lipstick Under My Burkha remains a powerful testament to female agency and desire. This film originally shattered glass ceilings in Indian cinema. Even in 2026, its themes resonate deeply with modern audiences. Director Alankrita Shrivastava delivers a bold narrative that challenges patriarchal norms. Furthermore, the 4K restoration brings a fresh visual clarity to this gritty masterpiece. This review explores why this film continues to be a mandatory watch for cinema lovers.

The Story Summary

In the crowded lanes of Bhopal, four women lead secret lives. Usha, an elderly widow, rediscovers her sexuality through a racy phone conversation. Meanwhile, Shireen hides her career as a successful saleswoman from her oppressive husband. Rehana, a college student, rebels against her conservative upbringing by embracing western fashion and music. Additionally, Leela attempts to escape her small-town life with her lover. These women struggle against the restrictive “burkha” of societal expectations. Consequently, they find small ways to express their hidden desires. Their stories eventually intersect, leading to a climax that is both heartbreaking and empowering. They represent the silent rebellion brewing in the hearts of millions.

Masterful Performances and Direction

Ratna Pathak Shah delivers a career-defining performance as Usha. She portrays the vulnerability and excitement of late-life discovery with absolute grace. Similarly, Konkona Sen Sharma brings a haunting depth to Shireen’s character. You can feel her suffocating presence in her own home. Moreover, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur provide energetic and relatable portrayals of younger women. They capture the desperation for freedom perfectly. Alankrita Shrivastava uses the camera to mirror the claustrophobia of their lives. Therefore, the audience feels every moment of their struggle. The direction is sharp and refuses to shy away from uncomfortable truths. Furthermore, the screenplay balances humor and tragedy with remarkable ease.

Visuals and Technical Brilliance in 4K

The 4K version of the movie enhances the viewing experience significantly. Specifically, the vibrant colors of the lipstick and clothing pop against the dusty Bhopal backdrop. This contrast symbolizes the hidden vibrancy within the women’s lives. Additionally, the sound design captures the chaotic energy of the local markets. The music score subtly underscores the emotional beats of each scene. Consequently, the technical upgrades make the film feel contemporary and fresh. The cinematography captures intimate moments without feeling intrusive. Therefore, viewers can connect with the characters on a deeper level than before.

The film explores the concept of the “inner life” with great sensitivity. Each character wears a metaphorical or literal mask to survive. However, their true identities emerge in the dark or in secret spaces. This duality creates a tense atmosphere throughout the movie. Furthermore, the film critiques the hypocrisy of a society that suppresses women. It shows how men often feel threatened by female independence. Nevertheless, the women find solidarity in their shared experiences. This bond provides them with the strength to keep fighting. Consequently, the movie serves as a mirror to the ongoing struggle for gender equality. It does not offer easy solutions, which makes it even more impactful.

  1. Desires are not wrong, but choosing the wrong path to fulfill them is. Everyone, including women, has the right to pursue their desires with dignity and good judgment. Chasing desires blindly can lead us to places where we can no longer justify our choices.

  2. Then came the fortunate day, where Bakhur and Capybara were going for to get their attendance together. On the way there, suddenly a dog came running towards Bakhur. It's a mystery why, but Bakhur got down like someone who has to do their business, but can't touch the disgusting toilet seat would position their body. I can't tell you whether that was Bakhur's intention, (I mean probably not, but you can't really be sure of anything with him), but his body sure got the memo. Then and there, He Bakhur soiled his pants. Oh yea and the dawg ran away , again I don't know why, but I guess it was capybara's demonic laugh after witnessing the horror on Bakhur's face. It was satisfying to say the least.

Later when Bakhur calmed down, he explained the now worried capybara (cuz you don't just poop out of nowehere like that, that can't be healthy) that he had actually been having troubles usings the washroom here in the dormantry. Something about them being too dirty and all. Which eventually led Bakhur too be severly constipated.

The wise capybara explained that Bakhur should look into solutions, and that he would help him, and never shame him, ok maybe laugh at him hysterically, but never more than that.

With time ,Bakhur got the help he needed and the two friends became better friends!

    THE END.

  3. no wonder this movie got banned. indian audience thrives on patriarchy, hence the hype on movies like animal, kabir singh while this movie which shows just a small piece of mind of women gets banned. it is truly asked- "why are people scared of our freedom?" or are they scared of losing the undeserving and unreasonable superiority that comes along with patriarchy?
