I recently sat down to watch the 1987 classic Marte Dam Tak. This movie is a real treat for fans of old-school Bollywood action. It features the legendary Raaj Kumar and a very young Govinda. If you love loud dialogues and heroic entries, this movie is for you. I felt like I was back in the 80s cinema halls.
The Powerhouse Duo: Raaj Kumar and Govinda
In my opinion, the best part of this film is the pairing. Raaj Kumar plays the role of Rana with his signature style. I love how he speaks his lines. He has a very deep and heavy voice. On the other hand, Govinda brings a lot of energy. He was just starting his career back then. I think their chemistry works well. Raaj Kumar is the “brawn” and Govinda is the “speed.” The story follows a police officer who gets framed. He later joins hands with a young man to take revenge. It is a simple story, but I found it very engaging.
Mehul Kumar’s Directorial Style
The director, Mehul Kumar, is known for making movies with big dialogues. I have seen his other hits like Tirangaa and Krantiveer. If you compare Marte Dam Tak to those films, you can see a pattern. He loves showing a hero who stands up against a corrupt system.
In my view, Tirangaa had more polish. However, Marte Dam Tak feels more raw and gritty. You can read my other reviews of his films on hdfolders.com. I feel that Mehul Kumar knows exactly what the Indian audience wants. He gives us hero-worship and justice in every scene.
Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing
I watched the new 4K version of this movie. I must say, the restoration is quite good. The colors look very real and bright now. In the old prints, the screen looked very dark and blurry. Now, you can see the details on the actors’ faces. The 4K resolution makes the action scenes look much better.
However, I need to talk about the Hindi dubbing and audio quality. Back in the 80s, movies were not recorded with live sound. Actors had to record their voices later in a studio. In this 4K version, I noticed some issues. The Hindi dubbing does not always match the lip-sync. Sometimes, Raaj Kumar’s lips move, but the sound comes a split second later. I found this a bit distracting. The background music is also very loud. Sometimes it hides the dialogues. I wish they had cleaned the audio as much as they cleaned the video.
Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-time View?
So, should you watch this in 4K? I think if you are a big fan of Raaj Kumar, you should. The 4K version makes him look like a giant on screen. The colors are great, and it feels like a new movie. But if you are just a casual viewer, a one-time view on a normal screen is enough. The story is predictable. The action is also a bit dated compared to today’s movies. I would say it is a “Must Watch” for 80s fans and a “One-time View” for the younger generation.
Conclusion
I really enjoyed the nostalgia of Marte Dam Tak. It is a loud, proud, and fun action movie. Raaj Kumar’s “Jaani” style is still unmatched. While the technical side has some lip-sync flaws, the 4K picture is a big improvement. It is a great trip down memory lane for any Bollywood lover.
