Nagin (1954) Movie Review: Vyjayanthimala’s Classic Hindi Superhit

I recently sat down to watch the classic movie Nagin (1954). It stars the legendary Vyjayanthimala and Pradeep Kumar. This film is a huge part of Indian cinema history. If you love old-school musicals, this one is a must-see. I was curious to see how a film from the 50s looks today. It is a story about two rival tribes, the Nagi and the Ragi. The drama starts when Mala and Sanatan fall in love. Their families are enemies, which makes things very difficult.

The Story and the Music

The plot is very simple but quite engaging. I liked how it focused on the clash between the two groups. Vyjayanthimala looks stunning and her dancing is just perfect. You can see more about her career on her Wikipedia page. But the real hero of the movie is the music by Hemant Kumar. I think almost every Indian knows the “Been” music from this film. It is catchy even after 70 years. I found myself humming the tunes long after the movie ended.

Comparison with Other Nandlal Jaswantlal Films

The director, Nandlal Jaswantlal, was a master of grand romances. I compared this movie to his other big hit, Anarkali. Both films deal with lovers who cannot be together. However, Anarkali feels more like a heavy historical drama. On the other hand, Nagin feels more like a folk tale. I think the director did a great job with the pacing here. In his movie Sazaa, the tone was much darker. I prefer the bright and musical world of Nagin much more. You can check out my other reviews of classic films on hdfolders.com.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the restored 4K version of the film. I must say, the picture quality is surprisingly good. The black and white frames look very sharp now. The color grading in the restored versions makes the scenes look very real. You can see the details on the actors’ faces clearly.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing and audio. Since this is an old film, it uses post-sync sound. I noticed that the Hindi dubbing is quite clean for its time. Sometimes in old movies, the voice does not match the lips. But in this version, the lip-sync is almost perfect. I did not feel any lag while watching. The voices sound deep and clear. They have removed the old hissing sounds from the background. I was happy that the dialogues were easy to understand without any loud noise.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

So, is it worth watching in 4K? I think so. If you are a fan of classic cinema, the 4K restoration is a treat. The visual clarity makes the dance sequences look amazing. However, if you are not into old movies, it might feel a bit slow. The storytelling style is very different from today’s films.

I feel this is more than just a one-time view for fans. The songs alone make you want to come back to it. But for a casual viewer, seeing it once is enough to understand why it was a superhit. I enjoyed the experience because of the great audio work and the sharp visuals. It is a piece of history that looks brand new.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed my time with Nagin (1954). It is a beautiful film with a lot of heart. The music is the soul of this movie. The technical team did a great job with the 4K update. The Hindi audio is crisp and the lip-sync is spot on. It is a great example of why old is gold.

My Rating: 4/5

  4. The film's soundtrack was composed by Hemant Kumar. It included thirteen tracks, including the hit "Man Dole Mera Tan Dole", whose "Been Music" was performed by Kalyanji on clavioline and by Ravi on harmonium, who once worked under Hemant Kumar's direction and later became independent music directors. It was released under E.P. and L.P. gramophone records by The Gramophone Company of India, now known as Sa Re Ga Ma. The lyrics were written by Rajinder Krishan. I have L P Record Of This 1954 released movie.

  5. This Movie was a Musical Hit and had collection record for many years.I reproduce from Wikipedia India about this movie "In 1954, Vyjayanthimala acted in magnum opus film Nagin with Pradeep Kumar. The film got favorable responses from the audience and became the highest grossing movie of 1954 where it was labelled as blockbuster. Her performance as the Nagi tribe's chief, Mala got her favourable reviews from the critics, where in 1955 a critic from Filmfare magazine had said that "Vyjayanthimala in the title role puts over a commendable performance besides looking ravishingly beautiful as the belle of the hills. Her dancing, too, is very graceful, specially in those eye-filling colour sequences and delightful ballets towards the finish" while in The Hindu review Vijay Lokapally similarly praised her portrayal "The ethereal Vyjayanthimala, barely 18, illuminates the screen with her stunning beauty, moving around daintily from one song to the other. The close-up shots of Vyjayanthimala highlight her ability to convey so much with so little effort[. Nagin was a precursor to her rise in Hindi cinema as an iconic actor, who combined her talents, performing and dancing, to rule the screen on her terms[…]biggest recall values of Nagin are Vyjayanthimala".Post Nagin Vyjayanthimala had established herself as one of the leading actresses in Bollywood because of the film's nationwide success. Hemant Kumar's music and her dance on the song, Man Dole, Mera tan dole, rendered by Lata Mangeshkar was one of the highlights of the film"  Why last 5 songs (back to Back have been truncated. Remember having watched the movie in late 1950s. People use to lift their feet because of snakes crawling. In all there were 13 Songs
