Narsimha Movie Review: Sunny Deol and Om Puri’s Iconic Action Drama

I recently sat down to watch the classic movie Narsimha, starring Sunny Deol and Om Puri. Even after many years, this film feels like a punch to the gut. It was directed by N. Chandra and released in 1991. I remember how big a craze this movie was back then. Watching it again in 4K made me realize why people still love it. It is a raw, loud, and powerful story about a man who loses everything and then finds his soul again.

The Powerhouse Performances

In my opinion, Sunny Deol was at his peak during this time. I loved how he played the character of Narsimha. He starts as a broken drunkard who works for a local goon. His transformation into a hero is still very exciting to watch. I think his intensity is unmatched. No one does the “angry young man” role quite like him.

Then there is Om Puri as Baapji. I found his performance absolutely terrifying. He doesn’t scream much, but his presence is enough to make you feel uneasy. The way he controls the city is shown very well. The chemistry between Sunny and Om Puri is the highlight for me. I also enjoyed seeing a young Urmila Matondkar and Ravi Behl in the supporting roles.

N. Chandra’s Style vs. His Other Hits

I have always been a fan of N. Chandra’s work. If you have seen his other movies like Tezaab or Ankush, you will see a pattern. He loves making movies about the common man fighting against a corrupt system. I feel Narsimha is much more polished than Ankush but has the same soul.

Compared to Tezaab, I think Narsimha is a bit more violent. While Tezaab focused a lot on the romance and music, Narsimha focuses on the power struggle. If you liked my review of Gadar 2 on hdfolders.com, you will see that Sunny Deol hasn’t changed much. He still brings that same energy to the screen.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Let’s talk about the 4K upgrade. I was surprised at how good the movie looks now. The colors are much better. The skin tones look real, and the action scenes are clearer. However, I noticed some issues with the technical side.

I wanted to specifically talk about the Hindi dubbing and audio sync. Since this is an old film, the original tapes often have issues. In the 4K version, I felt that some dialogues did not match the lip-sync perfectly. I noticed this during the heavy action scenes. Sometimes, the sound of the punch comes a split second after the hit.

The Hindi dubbing (re-mastered audio) feels a bit too loud at times. I think the background music sometimes hides the dialogues. While the voice quality is clear, it lacks the depth of modern movies. But for a film from 1991, I believe they did a decent job with the restoration.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K or One-Time Watch?

Is this movie worth watching in 4K? I would say yes if you are a fan of 90s Bollywood. If you love Sunny Deol’s dialogues and Om Puri’s acting, the 4K version is great. The visuals are a big step up from the old DVDs we used to watch.

However, if you are not a fan of old-school masala movies, you might find it a bit long. The movie is almost three hours. For a new viewer, I would say it’s a one-time watch. But for someone like me who grew up with these films, it’s a classic that belongs in a 4K collection.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed revisiting this movie. It reminded me of a time when heroes were larger than life. The story is simple but the acting makes it special. Despite some minor audio sync issues in the Hindi dubbing, the experience was great. N. Chandra really knew how to capture the anger of the youth.
