I recently sat down to re-watch Pardes, and it took me back to the 90s. This film stars Shahrukh Khan and Mahima Chaudhry in lead roles. It is a classic story about Indian values and love. Even after so many years, the songs still feel fresh.

The Story and Performances

Comparing Pardes to Other Subhash Ghai Films

Subhash Ghai is often called the “Showman” of Bollywood. I compared this movie to his other hits like Taal and Ram Lakhan. While Ram Lakhan was more about action and drama, Pardes is very soft.

I think Pardes handles the “East vs West” theme better than his other films. It does not make the West look bad just for the sake of it. It shows the struggle of staying true to your roots. The scale of the movie is huge, just like any other Ghai film.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the 4K remastered version of the movie recently. The picture quality is quite good. The colors look bright and the village scenes look very real. However, the skin tones look a bit yellowish in some parts.

Now, let’s talk about the Hindi dubbing and audio sync. Back in the 90s, movies used a lot of post-sync dubbing (ADR). In the 4K version, I noticed some issues. The Hindi dubbing does not always match the lip-sync perfectly.

In the close-up shots of Rajiv and Ganga, the voices feel a bit detached. Sometimes, the background noise is too loud. This makes the dialogue sound a bit muffled. I expected better audio cleaning for a 4K release. The songs, however, sound crisp and clear.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is it worth watching in 4K? I would say yes, but only for the songs. The beautiful locations of Canada and India look great in high resolution. If you are a big fan of Shahrukh Khan, you will love the details.

If you are a casual viewer, a normal HD version is enough. The story is the main hero here, not just the pixels. It is a long movie, so keep some snacks ready.

Conclusion

I think Pardes is a beautiful movie that every 90s kid should watch again. It has great music, a simple story, and good acting. The technical flaws in the dubbing are there, but they don’t ruin the experience. It remains a true classic of Indian cinema.
