Parichay (1972) Movie Review: Jeetendra and Jaya Bachchan’s Classic Hit

I recently watched the 1972 classic movie Parichay. It is such a heartwarming film. If you love simple stories about families, this one is for you. This movie stars Jeetendra and Jaya Bachchan in lead roles. It is inspired by the famous Hollywood film The Sound of Music. However, the director, Gulzar, gave it a very Indian feel. I felt so relaxed while watching this movie on my weekend.

The Story and Performances

The story is about Ravi (played by Jeetendra). He is a young man looking for a job. He ends up as a tutor for five naughty kids. These kids are the grandchildren of a very strict man, Rai Saheb (played by Pran). The children have driven away every tutor before Ravi. I loved how Ravi wins them over with love instead of fear.

Jeetendra surprised me in this film. Usually, we see him in high-energy roles with lots of dancing. Here, he is very calm and sophisticated. Jaya Bachchan is also excellent. She plays the eldest sister, Rama. Her performance is very natural. You can see more about her career on Wikipedia. The chemistry between the leads is sweet and subtle.

Comparing Gulzar’s Magic

I have watched many movies by Gulzar. If I compare Parichay to his other works like Koshish or Angoor, this one feels more like a fairy tale. In Koshish, the tone was very emotional and heavy. You can read my review of other Gulzar classics at hdfolders.com.

While Angoor was a pure comedy, Parichay sits right in the middle. It has funny moments with the kids, but it also has deep family values. Gulzar has a way of making every character feel real. Even the strict grandfather played by Pran has a soft side that makes you smile.

Technical Quality and Hindi Dubbing

I watched the newly restored 4K version of this film. I must say, the image quality is quite good for a 50-year-old movie. The skin tones look natural now. The black-and-white shadows in some scenes are very sharp. The color grading is simple. It does not look fake or overly bright.

However, I noticed some issues with the Hindi dubbing and audio sync. Back in the 70s, actors used to record their voices after filming. This is called ADR or dubbing. In many scenes, the Hindi dialogue does not perfectly match the lip movements of the actors. This is very noticeable in the 4K version because the picture is so clear.

The background music by R.D. Burman is legendary. But sometimes, the music is louder than the dialogues. If you are watching on a high-end sound system, you might have to adjust the settings. The Hindi dubbing quality feels a bit thin in some emotional scenes. It lacks the depth we hear in modern movies.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Now, you might ask if you should watch this in 4K. If you are a fan of old classics, then yes. The 4K resolution brings out the beauty of the old locations. You can see the details in Jaya Bachchan’s simple cotton sarees.

But, if you are not a “technical” person, a standard HD version is also fine. The movie is more about the story and the songs than the visuals. It is not an action movie where you need every pixel to be perfect. For me, it was a great experience, but the lip-sync issues in the Hindi dubbing were a bit distracting.

Conclusion

Parichay is a movie that stays with you. It teaches us that love can change even the hardest hearts. The songs like “Musafir Hoon Yaaro” are still great to hear. Despite the small technical flaws in the dubbing, it remains a masterpiece. It is a perfect movie to watch with your parents or kids.

  3. If given a good script & director, "Jumping Jack" Jitendra is a good actor…proof is Gulzarji's other 2 films, "Kinara" & "Khushboo"….both very different story lines & very watchable films….

  4. Bahut badhiya movie ❤ mera to dil bhar aya , itani sadagi aur pyar bhari kahani , purane movies sach me aam insan ki zindagi darshate hai aur isiliye dil ko chhu jate hai

  7. A beautiful movie. But this and the after era never tells the audience how to live like married. And that's the Delimmah of movie culture, perhaps all over the world.
They never emphasize on doing business or jobs, and how compulsory it is to survival, living and flourishing.
But this movie represents the various aspects of life including economic as Ravi came back into the village, because of Unemployment and started an odd job as Pandit ji expressed about the salary.
And Ravi Geniously analyze that he's not going to make his financial career in this running job as he received the job offer letter, and jumped into the better opportunity.
It is also a tragic love story of a father and a son. And an affection between grandfather and children.
Pran as Rai saheb seen at the peak of his character actor.
And how Ravi cultivate the love in Rama"s heart due to care for her little ones.
Can we bring back the simplicity, calmness, true emotions and dignity in our cinema culture?
Perhaps we can't bring back those beauties back to the screen but need to make the realities in theaters, dramas and in films also, but not the false fantasies and vulgarity to exploit and spoiled the humanity.
