If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, you probably know the song “My Name Is Lakhan.” I recently re-watched Ram Lakhan, the 1989 classic directed by Subhash Ghai. The skin tones look more natural than the old DVD versions. I noticed that the grain is still there, but it looks like a real film.

However, I have some thoughts on the Hindi dubbing and audio. Back in the 80s, movies used “sync sound” less. Actors dubbed their lines in a studio later. In this 4K version, the audio is very sharp. This actually makes the lip-sync issues more visible. In some scenes, I noticed that the words don’t perfectly match the lip movements.

The background score is loud and clear. But sometimes, the dialogue feels a bit detached from the environment. If you are a fan of modern crisp audio, you might find the studio-recorded voices a bit odd. Still, for an old classic, I think the restoration team did a good job.

Comparing Subhash Ghai’s Work

I often compare Ram Lakhan to other films by Subhash Ghai. If you look at Khalnayak or Saudagar, you see a pattern. Ghai loves making movies that feel huge. He is called the “Showman” for a reason. I think Ram Lakhan is better than Saudagar because the pace is faster.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K Watch or One-Time View?

Is this movie worth a 4K watch? I would say yes, but mostly for the fans. If you love 80s masala cinema, the 4K version is a treat. The songs like “Tera Naam Liya” look great on a big screen. The sharp details make the old sets look very interesting.

But if you are not into old-school drama, you might find it a bit long. The movie is over three hours. For a new viewer, a one-time view on a regular HD screen might be enough. But for me, the nostalgia alone makes the 4K experience worth it.

Conclusion

I had a great time revisiting this classic. It reminded me why Anil Kapoor became such a big star. The story is predictable but very emotional. The 4K upgrade is a nice touch for collectors. Despite the small lip-sync issues in the dubbing, the movie holds up well. It is a loud, proud, and fun piece of Indian cinema history.
