Reporter Raju Movie Review: Feroz Khan and Chitra Old Hindi Hit

I recently sat down to watch the 1962 classic Reporter Raju. This movie stars a very young Feroz Khan and the talented Chitra. If you enjoy old-school crime thrillers, this one might interest you. I have always liked Feroz Khan’s style. Even in his early days, he had a great screen presence. This film captures that raw energy perfectly.

The Story and Performances

I found the plot quite simple but engaging. Feroz Khan plays a brave reporter. He wants to expose criminals and bring justice. Chitra looks lovely and plays her part well. Their chemistry is sweet and feels very natural for that era. I liked how the story moves fast. It does not waste much time on unnecessary scenes.

The movie is a typical “good vs evil” story. However, the way it shows the life of a journalist is fun. I enjoyed seeing the old printing presses and the busy newsrooms. It felt like a trip back in time for me.

How it Compares to Other Films

The director of this film is Dwarka Khosla. He was known for making tight action and mystery films. I have seen his other works like Billi and C.I.D. Girl. If I compare Reporter Raju to those, I think this is one of his better works.

The pacing here is much better than in Billi. Khosla knew how to keep the audience curious. He used light and shadows very well in this movie. You can read more about the director’s career on his Wikipedia page. I feel this film set a standard for later crime dramas in Bollywood.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side. I watched this in a restored 4K format. I must say, the picture quality is a huge improvement. The lines are sharp and the grain is mostly gone. The black and white tones look very deep and rich now. It does not look like a 60-year-old movie anymore.

However, I have some complaints about the Hindi dubbing and audio. In many old films, the sound was recorded later. In this 4K version, the audio cleanup is a bit hit or miss. I noticed that the Hindi dubbing does not always match the lip-sync.

In some action scenes, the voices feel a bit detached from the actors. It sounds a bit “hollow” at times. If you are a fan of perfect sync, this might bother you. I think they tried to make the sound too clean. This caused it to lose its original warmth. You can check out our other reviews of restored classics at hdfolders.com.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it Worth a 4K Watch?

Is this movie worth your time in 4K? I would say yes, but with a catch. If you love Feroz Khan, you must see this. The 4K visuals make him look like a modern superstar. The restoration work on the film frames is truly great.

But if you are someone who gets annoyed by bad audio sync, you might find it hard. For me, it was a great one-time watch. I don’t think I would watch it again and again. The story is good, but it is not a “masterpiece” that needs multiple viewings. It is a solid piece of Indian cinema history.

Conclusion

I really enjoyed the nostalgia of Reporter Raju. Feroz Khan was a true gem even in 1962. The 4K version is a treat for the eyes. However, the Hindi dubbing issues hold it back from being perfect. The lip-sync errors are quite visible in the high-definition format.

If you want a trip down memory lane, go for it. It is a fun, fast-paced movie that shows the charm of old Bombay.

My Rating: 3.5/5

  4. यह फिल्म 1962 में ,10 साल की आयु में, सूरत शहर गुजरात के मोती टॉकीज में देखी थी। आज 70 की आयु में फिर यूट्यूब देखी।
    👏👏👏।

  5. Good movie with not strong storyline. the direction was good with good screenplay. it was an early film of Firoz Khan as a hero debut movie. it was a flop movie although the movie was not so bad. Feroz Khan has done good job as Hero. Chitra was also good in acting. Sundar was superb in comic role. BM Vyas as a main villain did good acting. jeevankala as Gopi in small role and Indira as Vimal Raju's sister also performed well. Ratan Mala as Raj Mata, Shah Agha as inspector Madan, manorma and baby vidhyarani as honey performed well. the songs and music were ok. this movie can be watched for once for firoz Khan only.
