The Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster franchise has always been known for its gritty portrayal of decaying royalty, thirst for power, and complex relationships. With the third installment, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3, director Tigmanshu Dhulia brings back the familiar faces of Jimmy Shergill and Mahi Gill, while adding the “Baba” of Bollywood, Sanjay Dutt, into the mix. The story picks up with Saheb (Jimmy Shergill) struggling to regain his lost glory while stuck in a legal mess. On the other hand, Biwi (Mahi Gill) has become more ambitious and manipulative than ever. Enter the Gangster—Uday Pratap Singh (Sanjay Dutt)—a royal from a different lineage who has been living in exile in London.

Jimmy Shergill is, as usual, the soul of this franchise. His portrayal of the egoistic yet vulnerable Saheb is top-notch. Mahi Gill plays the role of the seductive and dangerous Madhavi with perfection, though her character feels a bit repetitive this time.

His earlier works had a certain rawness and tight scripting that made you feel the heat of the dusty north Indian streets. In this third part, the “royal” gloss seems to have taken over the grit. While the dialogues are still “filmy” and sharp, the soulful storytelling we saw in Haasil is missing here.
