Thikana Movie Review: Anil Kapoor, Smita Patil & Amrita Singh Showreel

I finally sat down to watch the classic movie Thikana. This film features a powerhouse cast including Anil Kapoor, Smita Patil, and Amrita Singh. It is a gritty crime drama from the late 80s. I think this is one of those films that people often forget. However, it deserves more attention. The story is about a lawyer, played by Anil Kapoor. He gets caught in a web of lies and murder. I found the plot very engaging and dark.

A Typical Mahesh Bhatt Drama

Mahesh Bhatt directed this movie. If you know his work, you know he loves realistic stories. I would compare Thikana to his other hits like Naam or Saaransh. It does not have the usual 80s “masala” feel. It feels more like a real story about real people. The emotions are deep and painful. I have shared my thoughts on other Bhatt films over at hdfolders.com. Compared to his other movies, this one is much more of a legal thriller. I liked how he handled the tension in the courtroom scenes.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the new 4K version of this film. I must say, the color grading is quite good. The skin tones look natural now. In the old versions, the colors looked washed out. The 4K resolution brings out the details in Smita Patil’s expressions. You can see the pain in her eyes clearly.

However, I need to talk about the Hindi dubbing and audio sync. Since this is an old film that has been cleaned up, the audio sometimes feels detached. I noticed that in two or three scenes, the Hindi dubbing does not match the lip-sync perfectly. It is a bit distracting if you watch closely. The background music is loud, which sometimes hides the dialogue. I wish the sound restoration was as good as the video quality. But for an 80s movie, it is still better than most.

The Performances

Anil Kapoor is the star here. I loved his energy as a frustrated lawyer. He does not overact, which was rare in 1987. Smita Patil is a legend for a reason. Every scene she is in feels heavy and important. Amrita Singh provides a good balance to the serious plot. The chemistry between the actors feels very natural. I felt bad for the characters because the writing is so strong.

Viewer’s Verdict: 4K or One-Time Watch?

So, is this worth a 4K watch? I would say yes, but only if you are a fan of classic cinema. The 4K cleanup makes the movie look fresh. It feels like watching a modern film set in the past. If you are a casual viewer, a one-time watch on a standard platform is enough. But for collectors, this 4K version is a treat. I enjoyed seeing the tiny details in the sets and costumes.

Conclusion

Thikana is a solid movie with great acting. It shows the dark side of the law and society. While the Hindi dubbing sync has small issues, the 4K visuals are great. It is a must-watch for Anil Kapoor fans. You can find more reviews of old classics on our site hdfolders.com.
