Vidyarthi (2018) Hindi Movie Review: Jackie Shroff and Rahul Roy Back on Screen

I recently watched the Vidyarthi (2018) Hindi movie on a lazy Sunday afternoon. This film stars two big names from the 90s, Jackie Shroff and Rahul Roy. Seeing them together in a movie after so many years felt really nostalgic. I was curious to see if they still have that same magic on screen. This movie is actually a dubbed version of a regional film, but it was released in Hindi a few years ago.

The Story and Performances

The story of Vidyarthi revolves around the struggles of students and the education system. Jackie Shroff plays a very strong character, as he always does. I think his screen presence is still great. He has that “Bhidu” style that we all love. Rahul Roy also has a significant role. It was nice to see him, but I felt his character could have been more detailed.

The plot is quite simple and easy to follow. It focuses on social issues that many people face in real life. I liked how the movie tried to show the bond between teachers and students. However, the pacing felt a bit slow in the middle. I think some scenes could have been edited better to keep the flow.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

Now, let’s talk about the technical side, which is very important for dubbed movies. I watched the version that was marketed as 4K. Honestly, I don’t think it is “true” 4K. It looks like an upscaled version of an older print. The colors look okay, but they are not very sharp. I noticed some grains in the darker scenes.

The biggest issue I had was with the Hindi dubbing. In many places, the Hindi voice does not match the lip-sync at all. I found it quite distracting. Sometimes, a character would finish talking, but the Hindi audio would still be playing. The choice of voice actors was also average. Jackie Shroff’s voice sounds okay, but Rahul Roy’s dubbing felt a bit flat. If you are used to high-quality dubbing, this might bother you. Comparison with Other Films by Director Basanta Sahoo

The director, Basanta Sahoo, is well-known in the Odia film industry. He has made many popular regional hits. If I compare Vidyarthi to his other films like Priyatma, I feel this one is a bit more serious. His movies usually have a lot of emotions and family values.

In Vidyarthi, he tried to bring a social message to the Hindi audience. But the regional flavor is very strong. Sometimes, the jokes or the emotional scenes feel a bit loud for a Hindi movie viewer. I have seen better work from him in terms of storytelling. If you like such regional dubbed movies, you should check out our other reviews at hdfolders.com.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it worth a 4K watch?

You might be wondering if you should watch this in 4K or not. In my opinion, this is just a one-time view. I don’t think the 4K resolution adds much value here because the original source was not very high-quality. The visuals are simple and do not need a big screen setup.

I recommend watching it if you are a big fan of Jackie Shroff or Rahul Roy. It is a decent movie for a bored afternoon. But don’t expect a high-budget Bollywood experience. It is a simple story with a good message.

Conclusion

Vidyarthi (2018) is a movie that relies heavily on its veteran stars. While the story is meaningful, the technical flaws and poor dubbing pull it down. I enjoyed the nostalgic feel, but the lack of sync in audio made it hard to stay focused. I would say it is an average attempt.
