If you grew up in the 90s, you know that Govinda was the king of comedy. I recently sat down to watch Banarasi Babu again. It brought back so many memories. This movie is a pure example of why people loved the David Dhawan and Govinda duo. It is loud, colorful, and very funny.

The Classic Govinda Showreel

I feel that Banarasi Babu is like a playground for Govinda. He plays Gopi, a simple man from Banaras. He ends up in a messy situation involving a rich girl and a big inheritance. The plot is simple, but Govinda makes it special. His dance moves and funny faces are the main highlights.

I also liked the chemistry between Govinda and Ramya Krishnan. Kader Khan and Shakti Kapoor are also there to add more laughs. If you like 90s Bollywood comedies, this movie will not disappoint you.

Comparison with David Dhawan’s Other Films

I have seen almost all movies by David Dhawan. If I compare this to Coolie No. 1 or Hero No. 1, this film feels a bit different. Those films had a very fast pace. Banarasi Babu feels a bit slow in the second half. At hdfolders.com, I have shared thoughts on other David Dhawan hits as well.

While Hero No. 1 is a perfect family drama, this movie relies more on slapstick humor. It is good, but it is not the best work from this director-actor pair. However, the “Banaras” vibe gives it a unique flavor that other city-based movies lack.

Technical Quality & Hindi Dubbing

I watched the new 4K restored version of this film. I must say, the picture quality is a big surprise. The colors look very fresh and natural now. The old grainy look is mostly gone. The 4K resolution makes the outdoor scenes of Banaras look very pretty.

However, I have some complaints about the Hindi dubbing quality. In many scenes, the lip-sync is quite bad. I noticed that the dialogue starts a second after the lips move. This is a common issue with old movies where they redo the sound in a studio. In this 4K version, the clear video makes the bad dubbing even more obvious. The background score is also a bit too loud. It sometimes hides the actual dialogues. I wish they had fixed the audio sync as well as they fixed the video.

Viewer’s Verdict: Is it worth a 4K watch?

Is this movie worth your time in 4K? Well, it depends. If you are a huge Govinda fan, you will love seeing him in high definition. The songs look great on a big screen. But if you are looking for a masterpiece, this might just be a one-time view for you.

The story is a bit dated. The loud comedy might feel too much for some people today. But for a Sunday afternoon with family, it works perfectly. I suggest watching it once to enjoy the nostalgia.

Conclusion

Banarasi Babu is a fun ride if you don’t take it too seriously. It has great songs and amazing acting by the lead cast. The technical upgrade to 4K is good, but the poor Hindi dubbing and sync issues pull it down a bit. It is a solid piece of Bollywood history that every 90s kid should revisit.
